Judge Halts Green Jacket Auction Of Green Jackets

The Augusta Chronicle's Sandy Hodson reports on Augusta National's court victory over Green Jacket Auctions related to the current sale of the world famous sports coat.

Hodson's notes this about the filing and the club's claim of theft:

Augusta National filed suit Aug. 11 in federal court in Augusta seeking an immediate halt of an auction begun Aug. 2 by the Green Jacket Auction Inc. of Tampa, Fla. The auction, set to close Saturday, lists three green jackets, silverware and a belt buckle all advertised as authenticated Augusta National and Masters Tournament memorabilia.

On behalf of the Augusta National, Christopher Cosper argued in favor of a temporary restraining order to keep the auction company from selling what the club contends is stolen property or fakes which are prohibited by the club’s trademark. The club also contends that a document the auction company has that it says is a 2005 inventory of the club’s property also had to have been stolen from the club.

Yowsers...

The jackets are still listed as of now.

Augusta National received a favorable ruling in Augusta? No way. The Masteratti's hidden hand.
Ha ha what a surprise!

Wish the guys who run the Masters were in charge of the Federal Government

I'm tyring to decide if I should up the bid to $10,000 for that genuine ANGC members jacket that I could hang in my closet and stare at.....or take a pass on that and use the money on a buddies golf trip to Scotland and Ireland....hmmmm, tough choice but I think I'll go with Gullane, Lahinch et al.

Its as sad as having to stoop to buying a replica 'Claret Jug' - totally pointless, just marks you out to be an utter failure, not just in golf but in life too.

I'll bet Gary Player stole them! That sneaky little positive thinker! I'll bet he smokes cigarettes when no one is looking.

Tom - took a quick look at the auction website.....they claim to have a couple of Tony Jacklin's trophys including one from 1971 Ryder Cup....sad really....it seems to me that these should be displayed at golf clubs or associations that have relevance to the particular event or the player themselves.

I agree - to sell off something special is very sad and should got to a club - but not to the R&A or USGA, they don't know what to do with such things - then come to think of it what do they really know about Golf.

FC,

An amusing way to see if your local private golf club is on the decline ... you'll find tons of logoed golf shirts at your local Goodwill. All worn out ... but no longer loved.

Part of me says that there is an operation over in China making fake Augusta National jackets, and stupid Americans are buying them.

Ha ha, now that's something to think about!

name calling is pretty pathetic, Chris H.... If you think the act is moronic. then say t without calling someone a name.

As such, taking the time to comment on comment is moronic... as is my post , commenting on a comment about a comment.

Jacket auctions pulled on website.

The proper way to acquire items such as the trophies and really unique items of famous events would be to purchase the item (as some people cannot enjoy the view without owning the land) and then loan it to a museum, club, or other place of public or semi public viewing, for all to enjoy, and with proper acknowledgement of who has provided the item.

examples:

Donated by...
Loaned to XXX bar and grill by...
From the collection of ...
etc.
