Tiger Press Conference Gets Mildly Tense; Tabs To Rejoice

There were a couple of uncomfortable moments in the Tiger Woods press conference today as the standing room only assemblage of inkslingers served and volleyed at St. Andrews. Interestingly, all personal life questions were posed with a wee bit of how shall I say it? No accent...if you live in these parts.

Q.  Tom Watson has said you need to clean up your act on the golf course.  He's gone on record.  Many of us over the years have heard you use the F word, we've seen you spit on the course, and we've seen you throw tantrums like chucking your clubs around.  Are you willing to cut out all those tantrums this week and respect the home of golf?

TIGER WOODS:  I'm trying to become a better player and a better person, yes.

Q.  Your public image has been transformed in the last year or two.  Does it bother you what the public at large thinks of you?

TIGER WOODS:  Well, most of the people have been fantastic.  The places that I've played and the people that have come up to me have been great.  As I said, most of the people have been so respectful over the years here, and I wouldn't see anything different.

Q.  Would it bother you if there was a perception of you as a different sort of person now?

TIGER WOODS:  Hey, it's their opinion.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

And this pointed question on Dr. Spaceman Galea.

Q.  I understand that you had a two‑hour interview with the FBI a couple weeks ago.  Can you confirm that was the case?

TIGER WOODS:  That was the case, yes.

Q.  And are you able to go into any details as to why they specifically wished to speak to you?  And also why you felt it necessary to use a doctor from out of the United States, who apparently is not registered to ‑‑

TIGER WOODS:  Well, I can't go into any of that because of the fact that it's an open case so far.  So that's an ongoing case, so I can't comment.

The real news out of the session, besides six holes now being grassed at his Dubai project (what a relief!), was the revelation that Tiger may abandon the same putter he's used for all major wins this week due to greens he said are Stimping under 9.

TIGER WOODS:  Yeah, I've always been tempted to change my putter on slower greens, and as I said earlier to Steve, I've always struggled when greens are really slow.  My stroke has always been, even from when I was a junior golfer, was built in ‑‑ I always feel more comfortable when the greens get quick.  Some of my best putting rounds were when the greens were running at 14 or something like that on the stimp like at Memorial.  I feel so comfortable on those type of greens.

But on slower greens, I've always had a hard time.  I've always experimented with other putters throughout the years, but I've never put one in play until now.

Crikey! If the greens are at 9 then the Rand A must be Very concerned about the weather. They were at 10.5 during last years Dunhill when a 35mph wind rendered the course unplayable.

9.0 reading for the St. Andrews greens! . . . Last week during the Women's U.S. Open at Oakmont they stimped some of the approaches . . . 9.5 . . . Are we to assume the 9.0 is the R and A's desired speed for this year's Open Championship?

Weather at St. Andrews has been sloppy - rain forecasted for Wed,Thur,Fri.
Unless the Old Course has underground vaccum drainage, I don't know, a stimp of 9 is reasonable given conditions.

Chico,

Isn't the speed usually a last minute decision based on the forecast ? Granted the weather can be unpredictable at best and the growth rate is slower in cool temps (not sure if they even need a regulator), but once you send the mowers out it's too late if it blows hard aff the nairth.

anybody know what style of putter old piano teeth's alternate will be? is it just nike's take on scotty's anser rip-off, or something completely different?
07.13.2010 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
thusgone - Sales of the NIKE METHOD putter are about to go through the roof! Same blade style as he has always used. Glover and Cink won majors with it last year.

Just a thought - is this Tiger's payback to Nike for all the hassle caused? The bag is now all Nike for the first time in his career.
07.13.2010 | Unregistered Commentertitleist38
@thusgone same exact specs as the Cameron except for the loft. 1 degree less loft on the Nike.

Hornet-its hard to slow the greens quickly so they may have been left slow 'just in case' but its my guess as the forecast is for 30mph + winds over the weekend that they wont be cut down low unless they are really confident that winds will be lighter.
35 mph and 10.5 on thr stimp and they are sitting in the clubhouse.

Geoff, I know your sources will always be better than mine so I am curious where you found the Woods / Open interview ?
I have always relied on ASAP.com for transcripts but they do not have Tigers.
Is this a copy you made at the press conferences ?

why should the R&A want super fast greens? are the 5 Opens won by Watson tainted because
they were won on what we think of as slow greens?

shortly after the USGA developed the Stimpmeter we sent one for free to R&A Secretary Michael Bonallack who threw it into his office closet and never looked at it again.

Interesting video at the bottom of the article cited by OWGR about the technology in the Method putter, might be worth checking out. If Tiger putts well this week titleist38 will be right on the money!
07.13.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
The R&A can speed them up if they want to, overnight.
I think the speed of the greens isnt that much of an issue this side of the pond!!

I would have loved to see the look on Tiger's face, when the question was posed about toning down his tantrums and respecting the Home of Golf this week. Kudos to whomever asked that question!

The Method and a harder ball. I think it's safe to say Nike's turning the screws.

ESPN carried the entire thing live. It was quite civil and he didn't get pissy except for the question about his divorce being finalized yet.

Question: Tiger, where is the best place to pick up chicks in St Andrews?
Tiger: I don't know. I am going to ask Sir Nick Faldo later today.
07.13.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBrad Ford
I wish the media would just concentrate on Tiger's golf game and leave his personal life to him. Tiger's a great golfer, I like to just leave it at that.
Interested to see how he plays with this new putter.
07.13.2010 | Unregistered CommenterNicole
The R&A can NOT speed up greens overnite- as from; 9 to ll.

Where the hell do you nutty people get your inutty ideas.
07.13.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDr Alfeo Romano
Frank, there's NFW that Tiger would make an equipment decision based on any pressue from Nike...you're dreaming.
07.13.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
And that's why he's still playing Titleist irons, right, Del? What I really want to know if the new putter has the Ping grip.
"By switching to the Method putter, Woods will earn manufacturer Nike a forecasted $50m (£33m) in sales." - The Independent

That was a timely press release.

Clumsy promo.

Ky, you know that I know that you know that Tiger was on the Nike staff for a LONG time before he put a single club Nike club in the bag. He's not making anything and decided to make a change, simple as that. Plus the new putter has features that just might help him putt better on slow greens. Tiger doesn't need the money and Nike has no leverage over him at all because of it....Tiger will only bag what he believes he has the best chance of winning with -- but you know that already.

According to this article Tiger signed with Nike in 1996 and didn't switch to their irons until 2002, I didn't realize it was that long!!

Oh, Ky, one other thing...the new putter does have Tiger's favorite Ping grip on it.
07.13.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
Wind estimates for the weekend reduced from 35mph to more like 15 to 20.
Will they speed them up a bit?
Will Tiger change putters again?(who cares?!)
07.14.2010 | Unregistered Commenterchico
Didn't Bobby Jones throw a bunch of tantrums at St. Andrews and walk off the course on the 11th hole.
07.14.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRick
The media hounds who try to embarass Tiger are really just looking for self publicity, they don't matter at all, you either like Tiger or not, once this mess is completely behind him he will return and really show us what he's made of, he's no quitter although his bank balance will drop considerably after the hot blond gets done cleaning his clock, I suspect he will be single and much smarter going forward.
