Great analysis Geoff. Let's hope a network realizes the need for an architecture commentator and hires you. Of course, at most events, there wouldn't be much to talk about.

Geoff at St. Andrews makes this the website to go to for the Open, the greatest tournament in golf. Excellent analysis regarding opening up the left side to play as fairway. This concept can be applied to a lot of golf holes I have seen where trees are the culprit as well. Recovery shots are great, but allowing someone the opportunity to play a spectacular shot from a bad angle, or hang themselves will create far more excitement and will tell more about a player than having them hack out of deep rough.

It can not be overstated how great it is to have Geoff there reporting back to those of us in the States.

Who is Sam Weiman by the way?

Outstanding as usual. Was the USGA (circa 1995) responsible for the left side of the Road Hole this year? This is going to be fun! And if Tiger wins with his new putter, sales will dwarf those of the MacGregor Response after the 1986 Masters. Yea, Golf!
Geoff
very cool segment. Hope they let you do more of them in the future. You are really good at this.
Standing in the Valley on 18 would be pretty cool.

Would have liked to see a comparison of the old tee box and the new tee box just to get a feel for how much they actually added to the hole.

Good stuff. Couldn't agree more. You would think that the R&A has no clue as to what makes one of the most strategic holes in the world so good. No clue. None.

Again, great delivery, Geoff.

Speaking for those on the no-fly list, I would like to see the behind-the-tee angle.
Also, would you mind telling those RA fellows that Ludell suggests mowing wall-to-wall and see what happens?

When you sign with a network, will you still run the blog?

PS: Make GD get your cam op a sachtler.

First rate Geoff. Lucid and informative. I wish they had you running around doing one for every hole. :)

The Greatness of the Road hole has everything to do with the approach into THAT green and all of the hazards and features that conjoin in the fun. THIS DOES NOT MEAN ADDING ROUGH INTO THE MOST IMPORTANT AREAS ON THE COURSE, ESPECIALLY WHERE IT FITS INTO THE ROUND!!!!

Don't be so sure; we'll see how it pans out. You can hang yourself taking too much club out of the rough. Or, they chip sideways, and still have a tough shot of 170+ - no gimme is it?
