BBC showing live golf and a sneak at Tiger on the practice green; two 4 footers from the exact same spot and he misses them both wide right. Hilarious.

Ricky Fowler birdies the 17th - brilliant; he could double as Tango Man.

It looks like the wind is going to play havoc with the putting; whoever gets hot or lucky could make a good move. More chat...

Colin Montgomerie has been talking about Europe's Ryder Cup chances. "Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey, they're not in the team as it stands right now, they've got big days ahead of them. They're probably not thinking about the Ryder Cup right now trying as they're trying to win the Open, but I am. I would like as many of my so-called "big-hitters" to be in there so I don't have to so-called "waste" picks on big stars so I can use my picks the way I'd like to. Paul Casey can seal his spot today, Martin Kaymer can as well. Henrik Stenson can make a big leap in the right direction. Sergio Garcia is showing a bit of form now - if he can shoot something low and prove to me and prove to his peers that he's still there to enable himself to get picked then great."

Open leader Louis Oosthuizen on the practice range: "I was quite tired last night. Got home at 10.30pm and had a nice sleep. I was too tired to think about the lead I had! I'm just looking forward to today now. I knew I was going to be nervous on the first hole and I left a few more birdies out there (yesterday). I'm really looking forward to getting out and playing with Paul, it should be a lot of fun

Rory McIlroy talking up his chances. He starts the day on -4, 11 shots behind leader Louis Oosthuizen. "If I'm going to have any chance, I need to do something like I did on Thursday. You need to hit hard from the beginning, and I think you can because the wind is allowing you to. All the pressure will be on Louis today. Paul Casey doesn't have anything to lose really, he can just go out and do his stuff. It's Louis' to lose for sure."

Peter Allis - early starters are getting round in 3 hours 40 minutes; yesterday Tom Pernice was first man out on his own yesterday (chose not to play with a marker), and was done in 2 50. I would expect about 4-40 for the last group.

Pin on 5th - 86 yards!! from the front edge (8 paces from the right), and on the 9th, exactly centre of the green 21 yards from all four directions. Jan Jeong was saying that the greens are so large, it's like standing on an alient planet, like the moon, you are so far away from anything some times.

"When was the last time the top six going into the final round of a major were all non-American?" asks someone? Check the Neilson ratings to validate that one.

Does Rocco have trouble with his lefts and rights? He just did it again, and yesterday he implied that left and rigts are reversed for Lefties.. (I know he was getting at slice/hooks, but still....)

Only have access to ABC. Didn't realize they weren't showing the golf - only snippets from 3-6pm. Yesterday it was Zo for the first 80 minutes! DVRs are so handy.

The bleachers are 1/3 full again today. What if they gave a British Open and no one came? I think we now have the answer.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterScott
A five shot lead is hard to watch.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
This does seem poorly attended. Anyone know why?
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDsl
Why? The usual stuff. Prices up, up, and up. Hassles with parking. Poor spectator vantage points. No Woods challenge. HD at home, with comfortable concession and toilet service.

>This does seem poorly attended. Anyone know why?

Brits are all in Florida queued up for the Harry Potter ride.

Didn't like that swing from Louie on #5.

This Open has a strange feel to it. Feels like a regular tournament.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
this could become the most boring final round in open history unless the leader throws his back out.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterfred jones
Jerry ... in the new Scottish tradition, however, please remember to clean up your fouling! Golf on!

My guess is that the half empty grandstand is reserved for VIP types.
Eagle on the ninth. Good for Shrek, but Tighthead is right.
Did anyone catch the give/take of Watson v Aliss? Pompous Peter tried to say to Tom that he admired how Tom played all those 'shots along the ground'. Tom corrected him, saying that in actuality, Tom played in the air.

Aliss, incapable of admitting he was wrong, then attempted to correct Tom...on how Tom played and won 5 British Opens....that's right: Peter Aliss telling Tom Watson that he (Peter) knows more of how Tom played. Amazing.

Peter: how does it feel to have a bad golf shot named after you? ("Nice putt, Aliss" for crappy putts left short!)
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterSpence
That was a big birdie putt for Casey, coming on top of Oosty's eagle.

If I was nursing along the lead in the final round of an Open, TOC would be one my top choices of courses on the rota.

Carnoustie would be my last choice.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
@Wayne: you can watch on your computer on ESPN.
Spence,
We all have our opinions. I like Aliss (a lot) and enjoy his candor and wit.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTommy Naccarato
Tommy N,

If you see this, did you get over to Carnoustie when you had your stay at St. Andrews?

If so, what was your impression of town and course?
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
It's like watching a chess match in a cold, damp Moscow basement. More wind please...something needs to happen. Westwood needs to work on his short game, specifically putts under 2 feet - what a numpty.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
McIlroy -3 today.

What could have been, except for Friday.

I like him for the PGA.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
If Oosthuizen doesn't have a Dustin Johnson moment soon, I'm going to fall asleep.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
I think Casey had the Dustin Johnson moment....
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRIckABQ
Where the hell are the crowds? Weird.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commentervwgolfer
VW, what you talking bout? There are dozens on people on most holes; mainly out of camera range.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Nighty night, TH.

lol
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
Did I just hear that THe MECHANIC hit it off a window on 17?
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commentervwgolfer
This is another reason why I think Woods is going to have a real struggle to beat Jack's record.

Younger players coming out of nowhere playing great in majors.

They are not afraid to win.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
The Mechanic should go into movies once he is done playing.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
Where's Monty? Thought he was going to be part of ESPN commentary team. Only first 2 days? Was that the deal or did he get in a snit for some reason (so unlike him, I know). Not that they need or miss him, just curious.

Sean McDonough has been solid, factual addition. Leave Scott van Pelt home next time and just let Alliss ramble alone.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMedia driven
Dustin Johnson had two Dustin Johnson moments to finish.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterfred jones
Agree on Sean McDonough. A solid professional, unlike many (most?) of the former players.

A comment for consideration: Unless something unimaginably untoward happens in the next half-hour, doesn't this make the:

Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation-1

AJGA, Leadbetter et al.-0
I've never heard a more painful golf telecast. These guys are falling over each other trying to be poignant and it's excrutiating to listen to.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterLip Out
The most painful, twilight zone of a telecast I ever watched was when Norman crumbled at the Masters in '96.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
Rick Reilly is better as a writer than as a TV essayist. And he's dressed too goofily. Jack Whitaker, he's not.
07.18.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMedia driven
That's why I watched the international feed at espn3.com -- no commercials and while Peter Alliss is occasionally annyoing, at least that broadcast team didn't run on with diarrhea of the mouth like the EPSN team did...
