The Masthead And Ghosts

If you can guess the four silhouetted golfers above, well, you know your St. Andrews history. I'll reveal the hardest-to-guess figure tomorrow.

The painting is by Harry Rowntree from Bernard Darwin's Golf Courses of The British Isles. And as always, the masthead was lovingly put together by Tom Naccarato.

My guesses are - Alan Robertson, no idea, Young Tom, Old Tom.

Tommy, you called golf a game? Shouldn't it be the home of the Royal and Ancient Sport? ;-)

I like how different it is from the Pebble/Jacksonville etc ones. Very nice - love the bold size.

JT,
Wherever Max Behr is, he is very upset with me and turning over in his grave. HOW DARE I?!?!?!

In my defense, the wording was a play off of one of the St. Andrews railway posters, and, obviously, I wasn't at my best!

The guy second from left seems to be also in a group shot with Morris Sr and Robertson and other 'St Andrews stalwarts' on page 105 of Mackie's book 'Golf at St Andrews', but isn't identified. Michael Hobbs would know right off, if anyone is in touch with him.

I'll go with Mungo Park, Davey Strath, Colonel S.V. Hotchkin, and Old Tom

Lovely guesses and mostly correct. As expected, Allan Robertson, Young Tom and Old Tom were quickly ID'd. The mystery man second from the left will be identified soon. Hint: he pours a mean on-course beverage.

Don't the Scots refer to golf as "the game"?

Don't go changing Tommy.

I want to thank everyone for the compliments. Sometimes it is almost embarrassing, but I love doing it. If it wasn't for "GC" for getting me my first Photoshop program some years ago, I think I would probably still be working with the same rudimentary program I got free with a scanner I once bought about 13 years ago!

Thanks again GC, wherever you are!
