Rory: My Win Not As Impressive As Tiger In 2000

Chris Fedor with a nice summary of Rory's appearance on the Dan Patrick Show that has been talked about quite a bit by those who heard it.  On whether if he thinks his performance at the U.S. Open was as good as Tiger’s in 2000:

“No I don’t think it’s as impressive. Tiger was the only person under par in that field that week and I think there was 20 people under par at Congressional. The golf course was scorable and I was able to score a little lower than the rest of the guys but what Tiger did in Pebble to win by 15 shots was ridiculous. The performance I put in last week was good, it was great, but definitely not quite up there with what Tiger did in 2000.”

And on playing the PGA Tour full time:

“I tried it out last year and it didn’t quite work out for me. I love playing in the states, I love going over there, and I love spending time there, but I’m never going to leave the European Tour, it’s my home tour, and it’s a tour that gave me my opportunities at the start of my career. It’s tough to play both tours, I’d like to play a little bit more in the states, but it’s just tough with everything else that’s going on around the world. Hopefully I can make a few more appearances over there, but I don’t think I will join in the next couple of years anyway. It doesn’t mean to say that I will never join the tour again, but just at this moment in time, I think the schedule I have right now it works pretty well and we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Liking him more and more. He's right, re: Tiger at Pebble vs. his win, and his ego isn't yet inexorable enough to prevent him from saying so. Let's hope that continues as he wins more often, which I'd expect he will now that the, um, major hurdle has been crossed.

Can't be hard to change the 15 minimum event rule. It was nice to see the US Open winner with no Fedex points!
Rory has his head screwed on and has a great adviser in Chubby. He has made the odd gaffe to the press in the past (Ryder Cup is just an exhibition) but has learned from it. He has spoken very well to the press here in Northern Ireland this week and had a great time out at a nightclub with his mates last night - note, the nightclubs here in NI are not the type that you get in Vegas that Tiger liked so much. You won't find many $10000 hookers over here! In addition his 'retinue' is non existant, it is just his mates that he grew up with, no spongers, hangers on or ne'er do wells among them.

I'm not saying he is a dead cert to win every major going, he'd like to and will try but his head is screwed on, he is aware that he has exactly 3 tour wins to his name - what I will say is he is not happy with that figure!

@styles: maybe you should take a couple of deep breaths.

i'm a huge fan of rory's, but i fail to see what the relative cost of a prostitute in n.i. as opposed to the u.s. has to do with anything; and have you done a background check on all of rory's "mates" to determine the absence of "spongers, hangers on or ne'er do wells?"

before the great isleworth fire hydrant massacree, we didn't know much about tiger's off-course activites, and we don't know anything about what rory does when he is not tearing up majors records.

this is not to say that rory's not the altar boy that he appears. but lets not get ahead of ourselves here, shall we?

The only real problem with all the stuff Tiger was doing off course, was that he was married. Rory is not married and is in my opinion, free to do anything his little heart desires. Within the law of course.

Sounds like there's an arbitrage opportunity in there somewhere...?

del: it's definitely an exploitable market inefficiency there!

Rory sounds very mature and level-headed for one so young and talented.

I guess I'm old fashioned, but maintaining a stable of porn stars, not to mention the hitting on the neighbor's young (legal, but young) daughter, is *wrong* even if you are not married...
Irony of ironies, the "spongers, hangers on or ne'er do wells" in TW's life were also his "mates" from school. And they did go to nightclubs with him ... Rory, though, has a much older head on his shoulders than TW, who suffers from arrested development.

Rory McIlroy looks to be a much nicer person than Tiger Woods. That, I think, would be hard to challenge. it is a matter of varying interest to people -- some like to like their sporting stars, some are forgiving of transgression as long as the sport is good. There's a clear ethical decision here, but it is a matter of to each his own.

Only time will tell is he is as good a golfer. He has made a great start. Time is on his side for now. Let's see how he goes.
