The Real Best Field In Golf...

I'm always so impressed with the legends that are lured to play the PNC Father-Son Challenge, and the December 13-16 field announced Thursday remains the only event in golf that still lures The King and The Bear.

1. Steve Elkington/Sam Elkington (son)
2. Nick Faldo/Matthew Faldo (son)
3. Raymond Floyd/Robert Floyd (son)
4. Hale Irwin/Steve Irwin (son)
5. Lee Janzen/Connor Janzen (son)
6. Bernhard Langer/Christina Langer (daughter)
7. Davis Love III/Davis Love IV (Dru Love) (son)
8. Sandy Lyle/James Lyle (son)
9. Larry Nelson (Defending Champion)/John Nelson (son)
10. Jack Nicklaus/Gary Nicklaus (son)
11. Mark O'Meara/Shaun O'Meara (son)

And Lee Trevino. I thought the Toshiba last year would be his last event.

Another thing-the rules state that no participant can have held a PGA Tour card at any point. Didn't Gary Nicklaus, Robert Floyd and Dave Stockton Jr. have cards at one point?

Nothing like a father son event. My father who was an accomplished amateur and carried me in a lot of father son tournaments over about 40 years died this week. His loved golf and golf loved him back. 21 persimmon salute......
My condolences, S&T. My father would have been 81 yesterday (only made it to 55) and he spent a lot of the last years on the golf course with his buddies. I didn't play then, much, so I missed it. My loss.

Sorry to hear about your Dad S&T, my brother and I shared the honours of playing with my father during the father and son tournaments over the years. It was always a special golf day in our family and I know my father got a real kick out of playing from all the unusual spots that we got him into in the alternate shot format.

Condolences S&T.

Johnny Miller played in this thing a few years back, he embarrassed himself beyond belief, I was kind hoping he would take another crack at it and all the pros he critiques all year could have a look at what kind of hack he has become.

Sorry to hear that Former S&T.

Cherish the golf memories. My old man gave up golf by the time I was a kid, but he still watched and we often had good chats about the majors.

From the PGATOUR site

To qualify for the PNC Father/Son Challenge, participants must have won either a major championship or PLAYERS Championship in their career. The professional's partner must not have held a Tour card at any point,

Robert Floyd 23 Events $15,264 earnings
Gary Nicklaus 122 Events $693,581 earnings
Dave Stockton Jr. 271 Events $1,658,498 earnings

Even in the silly season the PGA tour sends the mixed messages.

So sorry for your loss S&T. My old man has alzheimers and unfortunately cannot remember our incredible experiences in Father Son golf tournaments. We played in many up in the Met section which were memorable and for me when I was a junior player it was always one of the most anticipated events of the year. We always talked about the Father Son tournaments for years. They are fun competitive events that really are memorable.

stack and tilt
When my dad passed suddenly, Guy Boros came up to me in the parking lot
at the Hope Classic. Gave me a hug, told me "only thing I can tell you, is it gets better"

Having gone through it himself, it was a communication that meant a lot to me.

It did get better, and will send some prayers til it gets better for you.
Hang in there

S&T...

Peace and prayers for you, your family, your dad and all his friends.

I miss my dad, and times together were special, and still are. He wasn't a golfer, but we did a lot of other things. I'm happy you have all those golfing moments. Again, peace, my friend.

Didn't mean to hijack this thread, but it was kinda weird seeing a father-son thread a couple of days after his death. My dad's last round was a modified alternate shot father-son tournament that my brother and I made him play in. He hadn't played in a couple of years and couldn't hit it very far, but he played his ass off that day. He hit it dead straight most of the day and played a lot of good iron shots off my brother's and my drives. Both of the scores were very close to par. For a few hours he had his mojo back. Thanks to everyone for the kind words.

Del-- the little car miraculously fired up Friday, we cleaned it up and put more miles on it than it had seen in years.
''For a few hours he had his mojo back''

You and your brother are good sons. Really thank you for sharing this with us.
