Your Augusta Fine Dining Guide...

What better way to kick off 2012 Masters coverage than with a story about...food.

Mary Ann Anderson tries to contradict the notion that Augusta is the place where food went to die, offering up some suggestions for those visiting during Masters week. I think I'll stick to dessert at the Rooster's Beak where the ice cream flavors include Peppermint Chocolate Cake, Pumpkin Ginger Snap, Blueberry Bacon, and Fruity Pebbles.

For a different type of pizzazz, try the Rooster's Beak, a trendy taqueria that specializes in tacos filled with all sorts of Southern-inspired ingredients like pulled pork, fried chicken or catfish nuggets, plus Itali-Mex entrees like Rooster Pizza and Mexican Lasagna. Offering special desserts of the day and original ever-changing and unusual ice cream flavors like Peppermint Chocolate Cake, Pumpkin Ginger Snap, Blueberry Bacon, and Fruity Pebbles, this is one sweet spot to eat. The restaurant, in the heart of historic downtown, is decked out with local art and photography and is just plain fun to visit. Visit www.FeedYourBeak.com.

I like reading articles about food. I have a pretty cosmopolitan palate, though I was brought up on , and remain appreciative of, simple fare. I stopped reading the linked article after the first screen page. The horror! the horror!

Any article about "fine dining in Augusta, S.C." that waits until the 3rd pargraph on the second page to mention Sconyer's Bar-B-Que (one of my favorite eateries in Augusta) was obviously not written by a Southerner! Note, this article is from the Miami Herald, hardly a southern newspaper, so what do they know about dining in the South anyway, right? Might as well have been penned by the food editor from the NY Times are Boston Globe. Either of these two ciites are about a far 'south' as Miami is anyway.

And the delicous southern traditon of shrimp & grits didn't get a call until one paragraph later?? Are you kidding me? Why shrimp & grits are two of the 4 major food groups for real Southerners!

And finally, there is no mention anywhere of cornbread - every community in the south has at least one cafe or restaurant that serves "the best cornbread in town"......Hard to believe Augusta National's cornbread didn't get a call?! I realize that is not public dinning buy you got to get the cornbread stick at ANGC - they are to die for!!

Now, that is Southern fine dining at its best!

And don't forget all the wild African trophy meat that Charl wants to barbeque for the champions dinner.

A Masters article without mention of Tiger? You'll never make it to The Golf Channel.

@CapSize, I can understand being unimpressed with the relatively recent culinary fad of adding bacon to everything, including sweets and alcohol, but what exactly about that article evoked the Heart of Darkness for you?

My first paying job after a paper route was at a AAA rated motel/restaurant.
Eye opening. The cardinal rule: don't order anything that's stuffed. That's where they use up the really off material.
So, go nuts and order, 'pulled pork, fried chicken or catfish nuggets' as an entree on their own.
Think twice about ordering them in a taco. That's where yesterdays entrees went to die.

You read my mind. My dad and I are going to a practice round on Tuesday. After hours of walking, I was thinking that we needed to find a cool place to eat.

No one even mentioned the egg salad or pimento cheese sandwiches at ANGC! A must for EVERY tournament attendee.
