Poll: Let's Help Davis Love Make His Ryder Cup Picks

I do not envy the task of Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love as he faces some tough decision with his four selections for the 2012 Ryder Cup team.

Here's a nice breakdown on Sky Sports of the dilemna he faces and a John Huggan infused take on the state of the teams heading into Tuesday's announcement press conference.

I voted first and went with Stricker, Watney, Snedeker and Johnson, going with the youthful guys who are playing well. Furyk is a tough veteran to leave off, but it's time to give a younger guy some more experience and let Stricker do the Tiger babysitting.

You can select up to four...

What about Bo Van Pelt?

Anyone, anybody, who can't CHIP onto the green, two putt, and close a competitor out, WOULD NOT be on my short list.

The first 3 seem easy, but the 4th is a tough tough pick. Mahan because he's hungry for redemption? Furyk for the experience? Fowler for the ....well, the uhhh.....hair?

I wish Snedeker were as big a lock as the voting seems to have him. He had a pretty bad missed cut at the PGA, but the only wild card with two top tens in the playoffs. Sneds should feel aggrieved if not taken.

I just have a feeling DL3 might go a different direction. Nonetheless, Furyk, Mahan, and Fowler haven't done enough, but at least one will have to be taken. There's no way he should pick Watney or BVP over any of the top 6.

I don't doubt DL's integrity, but if it's between Sneds and another he might go with Sneds. Sneds is in the same stable as DL down in Sea Island, and while he doesn't live there(don't think anyway) they have the same agent that does live at Sea Island and being named to the Ryder Cup team has got to be a HUGE thing in terms of endorsements. I think it will be Sneds.

J Haas is picking up steam. Four votes.

Why is ol' 3-iron even on the list?
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
By far the least deserving of the top 6 is Fowler, what amazes me is how many people continue to advocate for him. He did not win a single point in his first Cup (2 1/2's) - which he also was a Captains pick. He's won 1 tourney in what - 3+ years on tour ? pass.
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrianS
Looking closer at Fowler's season, he had a hot May, but has done absolutely nothing since then, including 3 rounds in the 80s and taking four weeks off between the opens. This is not the resume of a captain's pick
09.3.2012 | Unregistered Commenterpenneraj
I'm surprised Jay Haas's name popped up.
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterManos
Can't pick Watney because of the nonsense with his caddy earlier this year.

Furyk is a choking dog who will poison the rest of team USA with his chokitude. His Ryder Cup career is terrible and he's been a big part of all the underacheiving teams that have been owned by the Euros for over a decade. Please no.

I was looking at the Ryder Cup records, maybe someone can explain this: Phil is going to set the record with 9 American appearances. But the record for most singles matches played has Arnold Palmer at 11, and several others (Jack, Trevino, Casper, Littler) at 10. Were there years in which singles matches were played more than once ? Or could someone play twice in a day of singles ? thanks for the help !
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrianS
@BrianS..... The RC used to have single matches twice. Jack Nicklaus lost twice in singles to Brian Barnes on the same day in 1975.

You cannot ignore Mahan's WGC Match Play win this year. Plus, you have to think he wants to atone for what happened in 2010. He did step up and take the anchor match, he is a leader. Snedeker and Stricker are also on the team. It comes down to Furyk or DJ for me. Furyk has a losing Ryder Cup record and was not good in 2010. He has been streaky this year, can't close. DJ has the hot hand, but did not play well in 2010 Ryder Cup. He did destroy Kaymer though in singles. I think the US plans to set up the course to favor the Americans length off the tee. You have to go with DJ in this instance. Get some power in there, would pair well with Dufner I think
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterJack Mioff
OWGR, the Tour could use a healthy dose of Brian Barnes's right about now! (not sure about that punctuation but gave it my best shot)

Hilltop, what happened with Watney and his caddie? Can't recall. I bet DJ's caddie can now successfully identify a sand bunker and a jet ski, reading a clock still up in the air!

I think DL3 goes with Furyk, Stricker, Mahan and Snedeker. Pretty surprised with some of the voting there....kind of funny that Dad has almost as many votes as ol 3-iron!
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
Speaking of Dufner, has anyone noticed how grumpy he has been the last month or so? Actually right after he got back from being married. More emotions from a guy who typically doesn't have any emotions visible.
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterTicky B
This could happen: Love passes on Watney...Watney wins FedEx Cup.
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobert Matre
I think it would be a job well done if the US can even keep it close. The talent level really seems to be at a low point for the US, so I expect a pretty convincing victory by the Euros. Of course, it's not played on paper, yada yada yada, but I'm not seeing anything to make me confident in a US victory in the current crop.
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterJim S
I see the obvious picks, but considering the Americans have struggled for many years, I think it is time to consider a different strategy. How about Kevin Na and Ben Crane? Put them together to face Poulter and Westwood. Would piss them off with all the slow play. Maybe add John Daly to blind the competition with his clothes. Then add a hot chick like Natalie Gulbis, she'll provide additional distractions.
Richie, that Crane-Na commentary is hilarious stuff, well done! Crazy thing is I think you're right, Poulter would self-immolate on the spot!!

But the Gulbis thing, that won't work in the American's favor....especially if DJ's on the team, his back would never hold up. And she'd never distract the Brit's as her teeth are too good...perfect teeth don't interest them, they like their teeth with a lil' Austin Powers type of shape and shading to 'em ;-)
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
Could only work at the President's Cup where the captains don't do blind picks.
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterUnderTheChin
Do you think Davis is reading this before making his calls tonight?
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterTicky B
Stricker, Snedeker, Johnson, Watney.

If the thinking behind tweaking the selection process was to get more on-form players on the team, then I don't see how Mahan and Fowler can be chosen.

Furyk? Lousy Ryder Cup record, plus it doesn't look like the course setup will suit his game. Maybe Davis could use another assistant captain.
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterMJS
It's a tradition for polls on this site to include one outside-the-box option, or a giggle for those with a sense of humor who might recall the 1995 Ryder Cup...maybe I should have been less subtle and included Curtis Strange?
09.3.2012 | Registered CommenterGeoff
Why all the hate for Furyk's Ryder Cup record? Last I checked the foursomes/fourballs record are of two people's Play. And in singles Furyk is 4-2-1 and 5-2 at President's Cups
09.3.2012 | Unregistered CommenterRyan
If possible, he would pick
Jack Welch and Dick Ferris.
Who needs players when you can schmooze execs
09.3.2012 | Unregistered Commenterfwiw
Let's not forget the Ryder Cup is first and foremost a commercial venture - so Fowler will get picked because of his supposed appeal to a mythological teen/early twenty something demographic who actually think golf is "cool ".......
09.4.2012 | Unregistered Commenterdavid
Furyk
Fowler
Haas ... twice
Fowler (great comeback in Celtic Manor)
DJ -length -Medinah is set up perfectly for him
Stricker
Watney...

You read it her first folks!!

Come on Europe...!!!
09.4.2012 | Unregistered CommenterIrish Golf Nut
@Harv: There is also the Bridgestone connection between the Captain and Snedeker. Money talks, loudly on the PGA Tour.

Funny, Del, but I think when DJ allowed as how they weren't dating even as she was in Hawaii to watch him play sort of put a damper on that.
