D.A. Points Channeled His Inner Bill Murray Down The Stretch

Jason Sobel on the mind games D.A. Points played to keep himself loose down the stretch in the Shell Houston Open.

Since his first win came at Pebble Beach with Pro-Am partner Bill Murray, Points had good reason to go slightly goofy to get the win:

“So what I kind of came up with today was I would just give a really cheesy grin to my caddie because as it's been noted I can be hard on myself and I don't do as much smiling on the golf course as I probably should. So every time he wasn't looking at me, I'd kind of look at him with this big, cheesy grin. He would start laughing and I would instantly laugh. That was just enough of the stuff to break the tension.”

And then there's his mother's putter. John Strege recounts the great story of Mary Jo Points caddying for her son in the Masters Par-3 contest in 2011 and also for giving him a PING putter he's used off-and-on to great success, including this week.

"I brought it with me this week because I just had been putting so bad," he said. "I thought maybe I'll pull this old putter out of the garage and maybe it will have some magic in it."

I was just happy that Billy Horschel (sp?) got his cap turned around finally when a playoff became possible. I've never seen a PGA Tour pro flip his bill around post-round before.

"American Domination"...lol

In the early coverage, pre NBC, on either Saturday, or Sunday, Mr. Frank Nobilo pronounced the Ping Anser, a staple of golf for decades, and the putter that expensive putter''designers'' (WHAT A JOKE) simply copy, as an ''anzer'', a pronunciation I have never heard

This is another example of the disconnect these guys have from reality-same as calling a ''hybrid'' a ''rescue'', or a ''utility club'', or Jacobson making fun of the 3 color ''Yes!'' grip, thinking it was a team color thing, although the Yes! grip has been unchanged for about a decade... maybe if you did golf research ( how had could it be?) instead or trying to be funny or whatever it is you are doing, playing music, only adequately, at best.

''ANZER!'' WTF

Bobby, I have an old Dale head, with a 9'' step. a lefty. It feels great, but I need to replace the very worn ''pro only'' grip.

Don't replace the grip, digs, it's a relic! Scruff it with sandpaper and wash it with water regularly if you want some tack on it, but don't replace it!

Speaking of the "American domination" - at what point did they start to keep the record of most consecutive wins by Americans on the PGA Tour? 14 straight is the most since 1989, yes, but were there ANY non-American Tour winners prior to Gary Player joining the Tour in the late 50's, other than Bobby Locke's brief sojourn in 1947 and the odd Australian winner like Jim Ferrier? It sounds like major historical revisionism to me.

Just checked it out - in the 1970s alone, there were 11 streaks of American players winning more than 14 PGA Tour events in a row. The most was 51 straight in 1975-76. Take that in your pipe and smoke it, Ponte Vedra spin doctors.

" need to replace the very worn ''pro only'' grip."

Dig...you can still buy the OEM Ping pistol paddle putter grips from Golfworks for 5 or 6 bucks...they are identical to the old Pro Only grips that were used on the older Ping Ansers, Daleheads, etc. Same putter grip used today by Tiger Woods and me :o) Go ahead and replace it if you are going to play with it.

There was a pro only that didn't have the arch in it like those PING grips have.
Or were those put on after market back in the PING scottsdale days?
