Video: Greg And Joe Live From The Pines At Pinehurst!

Other than Greg Noman calling Bill Coore “Coors" and repeating himself endlessly, this is only mildly painful unless you detest hearing the stock Fox Sports theme music. Get used to it. #12years #nocrashingrobotsyet

BTW, on the topic of theme music, Alex Myers wrote about NBC's iconic U.S. Open music, which may not be heard again when the network ends its U.S. Open coverage Sunday. The Yanni-composed "In Celebration of Man" started out as Olympics music.

"I would be disappointed if Fox doesn't use it," said Yanni, who is in the midst of a world tour covering 20 countries promoting his new album, Inspirato. "Nineteen years is a long time. 'In Celebration of Man' is kind of like a statue. And it stands for golf."

Despite requests, Yanni has never performed the piece live or included it on an album, but perhaps that will change now. "This song won't be lost," he said.

It certainly won't be lost among the golfers everywhere who hear or even hum the song when striking a good shot. Wait, that can't just be me . . . right?

Norman signed autographs earlier this week and Sam Weinman wrote about his preparation work for the U.S. Open broadcasts starting next year. Greg is mentoring Joe Buck, so rest assured:

"We've got 12 months to work at it," Norman said while signing autographs behind the 18th geen. "Joe's a good player (Buck has a 3.6 handicap index). But there's a difference between being a good player and being out here in the U.S. Open. There's a lot of little nuances he would never pick up on as a player. But we'll try to talk those things out and he's going to help me when we start in the booth with our rehearsals. So it's fantastic I can walk around with him on a day like today."

We'll be crying for Johnny Miller this time next year

I thought the NBC-Yanni music was kinda dull and paled next to ABC's great "Love Theme.'' Think it's a stretch to say it's anything special that will be missed.

Norman goes right to Adam Scott huh ? Says he has to go to the Aussie ? Well that is a great indicator of his outlook as a lead Analyst - go with your protegee because you "have to" ?

I know he won the Masters and has done really well - but re-watch the back 9 of last year's Open at Muirfield, and you will never pick Scott to win anything that involves putting under pressure.

All Under. All the Time. All six players.

Has anybody bashed Jimmy Roberts this week?
the NBC US Open music is certainly good---much better than the Masters maudlin theme.

Jim McKay's voice with brass fanfare followed by 'Love's Theme'--now that is iconic.

How many Red Bulls did Norman drink prior to that exhibition. Not knowing, or acknowledging, Bill Coore's first name was painful to watch. G-Mac got it wrong today as well, but he is not a lead announce guy. And what's with Greg's hairline?
06.12.2014 | Unregistered CommenterMashie
Yanni? Really? @BrianS, I'm not supporting Norman, but from a non-American's point of view, try watching most coverage originating out of the US. Foreign players rarely get the air time that their American peers do unless they're contending on Sunday.
06.12.2014 | Unregistered CommenterMeefer
Sounded like the start of a NFL game.
As an American, watching our national championship, I resent Greg Norman as a co-anchor.

The whole thing with foreign announcers started with Henry Longhurst at the Masters. It worked because Longhurst had been a long-time writer, covering golf, and he had a soft touch. There was no ego involved, just a nice soft wit.

Norman has way to big an ego to ever be a truly world class announcer.

Plus, I find his voice grating. It will be insufferable for over an hour.

The stupid experiment of Greg Norman doing the US Open should stop, right now.

Peter Jacobsen, Andy North, Curtis Strange, Lanny Wadkins - any of them would be far better. IN FACT - Geoff, please pitch yourself.

@ Meefer - I don't care if he touts Scott - he is the World #1 and a great player - but if he tried to do it with at least a semblance of impartiality towards his countryman, that would be nice, and what the job entails.

I look for Norman to step in for The Donald in 2015 for controversial threads on GS. Can't wait. Looked like the FOX on course studio was out on course #4 as the clubhouse looked a mile away...

Did anyone else not notice him say MatsuyamaSON. He completely got his name wrong!!!
06.12.2014 | Unregistered Commentergolf boys 2.0
Golf Boy, using Japan honorifics - Matsuyama-San is the correct - and polite way- to address just so you know..

This was weak, but Golf Channel's Live From is the same show it was 10 years ago. Ken Scholfield and Monty? They are just as inane as Norman.

thank you, i didnt realize that. interesting that no one else seems to do it though. it makes a person like me (who had no idea) think he doesnt know what hes saying

Shark's 3 picks? Scott, Bubba & Kuchar. Well, 33% isn't too bad from the back of the range!

+1 Dave

can it get any worse ?
Hey y'all-- what about Joe Buck????
Norman is going to be Not Good. Buck will be OK if he stays awake.

The Fox music needs to change. I'd be happy with some Chirkinian-era CBS Golf smooth jazz.

What difference does it make, I had to mute ESPN this morning. just couldn't take it any more
06.12.2014 | Unregistered Commentercameron
If you like Yanni you're in serious trouble and it has nothing to do with theme music.

Scott is solid until he steps on the green. You'll have to work hard to convince me he has an ounce of confidence. Appears to be talking himself out of every putt before he starts wishing them in. A half decent putter would have turned that +3 into a 68 or 69 off his iron play. And any competitor that watched Kaymer play the back, 16, 17 and 18 to be specific, won't be having any warm feelings about his chances.

Announcers...any of them ...even Berman...don't bother me...meh...What does bother me is breaking to a Jimmy Roberts feel good story in the middle of the US Open live coverage...ah!!!!!!stop it!!!

"Joe's a good player (Buck has a 3.6 handicap index). But there's a difference between being a good player and being out here in the U.S. Open. There's a lot of little nuances he would never pick up on as a player."

This quote puts on full display Norman's ignorance of how a TV booth works. Nance and Hicks and other Play by Play guys do/have played golf, but their expertise has little or nothing to do with their skill as a player. That is the Analyst's job. I am actually pretty open minded about Fox in general, but this Norman thing is concerning.
06.13.2014 | Unregistered CommenterBrianS
I wonder how widespread Greg V's resentment is re the Australian voice. It had never occurred to me.

But then, golf broadcasts, like star talent shows, seems to be the province of the British voices of authority. (Even if, like Frank Nobilo, you seem to bring nothing to the table but a Kiwi accent.)

Now I have to pause. Does any golf broadcast in the English-speaking world use an American analyst?

<< Now I have to pause. Does any golf broadcast in the English-speaking world use an American analyst? >>

Butch Harmon works for Sky Sports on the broadcasts in Britain, I believe. Others?
06.13.2014 | Unregistered CommenterBenSeattle
@Hod - Paul Azinger is doing analysis on the ESPN broadcast. And of course Johny Miller fills that role for NBC.
06.13.2014 | Unregistered CommenterGreg B.
Thanks. I meant, outside the USA. And thanks to BenSeattle I learn about Butch Harmon. Interesting.
06.13.2014 | Unregistered CommenterHod
You're welcome. Hod, the sole reason for my existence is to insure that you are fully informed. :-)

As for this duo, I'm very skeptical about whether it's possible for any announcer to Actually Add Something To The Broadcast. Go back and listen to the pieces above. Norman says ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that even the most casual golf fan doesn't know already. No useful facts or anecdotes; mere guessing and speculation. (And we all know that ANYBODY can do that.) I fully expect Norman and the Fox crew to fall into the typical golf announcer routine of 1) making useless predictions 2) telling us stuff we don't really care about, i.e. "This one should break left, Vinnie" 3) telling us what we just saw, i.e. "Uh oh, he doesn't like that one" and "That just slides by on the right." Wow -- what insight!

I know of lots of folks here (for reasons I cannot understand) don't like Brandel Chamblee, but in what little I watch of "Live From" I'm always amazed about his astute and convincing use of statistics to make a valid point, rather than merely offering another worthless opinion.
06.13.2014 | Unregistered CommenterBenSeattle
From watching that I'm quite sure Norman has been doing some 'rehearsing' of his on-air anchor? lead analyst? position to come. Whether or not he's been getting some coaching, only he knows, but there is no doubt there is some conscious effort going on there. Someone needs to tell him it's not a race and you don't need to speak as fast as you can.
06.13.2014 | Unregistered CommenterPress Agent
That segment was brutal.
I just wish all these guys knew when to stop talking. ESPN seems to be filled with about 98% dialogue from 10 different people who all seem to be shouting at every ball more than the players.
06.13.2014 | Unregistered Commentercameron
While this thread is now old news early here on Saturday morning, I fear the Fox impact next year will not be felt so much in the main announce team but in all the "extras" that the network will include in order to bring something "new" and "fresh" and "innovative" to coverage of a major event. What does that mean? LOTS more screen-clutttering graphics and cute sound effects of when these graphics appear. Will we cut away from Actual Golf Shots in order to throw in more features? Maybe some "funny stuff" from comedian Frank Caliendo. Will we hear from assorted non-Hall of Fame golfers learning how to do their best "golf voice" or the usual Fox lineup of football play-by-play announcers who are propped up in the booth to utter golf wisdom for the very first time? Don't expect the wit and honesty of McCord or Feherty or Miller but if the USGA money-grabbers have their way, it will be a WAY BETTER broadcast than NBC ever DREAMED of staging.

Or not.
06.14.2014 | Unregistered CommenterBenSeattle
The swooshing sound effect when breaking away from one video clip to another is egregiously annoying. One can only hope it is eliminated before the first Fox US Open broadcast.
