Oh No! GMac Wants McGinley To Smooth Things For Clarke

Now that he's patched things up with Rory McIlroy--well, until Rory's lawyers drop a few more requests for personal info--you'd think Graeme McDowell might have gone quietly as sort of the utility man that was the other Team Europe MVP after Justin Rose.

(BTW, I just don't know what else to say about the Getty Images shot posted at the Daily Mail featuring The Litigators, McIlroy and McDowell, other than I'm moved to see Northern Irishman proudly holding up a defaced flag of their home nation.)

Instead, GMac used Sunday's euphoria to ask Captain Paul McGinley to set aside his differences with Darren Clarke, who we recently learned backstabbed the current captain, and smooth the way for the Northern Irishman to be the next European Captain, even though he falls on most people's lists somewhere between Monty and a hologram of Henry Cotton, especially with huge personalities like Miguel Angel and Paddy waiting in the wings.

From an unbylined BBC report:

"Darren and Paul should put their differences aside," said McDowell.

Darren needs to spend some time talking to Paul about the way he [McGinley] has conducted himself this week.

"Paul commanded a huge amount of respect in the team room and was the best captain I have ever played under by far and that's no disrespect to any of the other captains."

So why not Paul again?

Man! They can't even wait for the hangover to wear off? The Ryder Cup really does mean more to the Europeans--they're already plotting their next victory. But what's going to happen when they (inevitably) start to lose these things? Because let's face it, as we sit here breathing there are armys of young golfers with more potential than Tiger Woods, asleep in their cribs in California, tucked in by their sports psychologist mothers, their bellies full of organic broccoli, dreaming of of 18 holes-in-one.

Geoff, I may be missing something here by not understanding American humour, but it comes across as just a tad "bitchy". Using my own secret algorithm to translate what they said. "We have had some tough personal issues to deal with but we are great mates." How anyone who saw they way GMac greeted Rory after his singles could doubt that is beyond me. To continue the translation "Paul and Darren have had a falling out but we really want them to be mates again because that would be the best thing for the European Ryder Cup team". This is why Europe wins the Ryder Cup.

Flags are often 'defaced' in the UK for sporting events. We don't have quite the same semi-religious fanaticism over our emblem.

Good question though, why not Paul again?

@Oxford Bufties

Personal issues? You've obviously never been sued.

@Medicus Victim

Apologies if my euphemism wasn't effective. I have never been sued and neither has McDowell (at least not by Rory McIlroy). The parties to the litigation are Rory and Horizon. What also has got very little comment is the fact that GMac has decided to take his management business away from Horizon and take care of it himself, so you have to wonder just how comfortable GMac is with how things were managed by the people running Horizon.

How sore can a loser be to insist on the litigators, digging up stuff between Paul and Darren after the sad and shameful demonstration of a team whose captain was, basically, publicly insulted by Phill 'New Rich' Mickelson without even one player having the balls to say something about it.

As for flags, I’m with you Geoff, every flag should be treated with the highest respect. How many states were represented on the US team Saturday’s ‘sweater?

@ Oxford Bufties. I am a huge fan of this blog but one thing you quickly notice is that good news stories are of no interest on here. Give something to bitch about and a bit of conspiracy theory thrown in a and we're all over it!!

Chico, +1. This has to be the most curmudgeonly blog in golf.

Clarke tried to have McGinley removed as captain and replaced with Monty.

Rory's suit alleges he was signed to a contract after getting filled up with grog at a party and was never informed that McDowell had an ownership stake in the company.

What i take away from this week-end : Awesome Ryder Cup, again.
It's just too bad for the US. But i am not worried, they will get their act together.
Europe had a great team, an unreal top 5 and strong supporting cast. They also had a super captain and they were home.

Why not Paul again? No, somebody else gets a chance.

American players want to be part of the decision making process. In other words, todays American players want 12 captains because todays pampered players cant be team players. They are pampered individuals. That is why past generations cant coach them.

When will Andy North appear on ESPN and explain everything that went down??

The European team is a "family," which explains why they always beat the evil American capitalist schweinhunds, who only care about money and self interest. No problem is too large to interupt the flow of love. Good ol Graham neglected to tell Rory he was going to profit from Rory's Tigeresque windfall? Clickbait. Everybody's best mate Darren shived his countryman McGinley to make room for Mrs. Doubtfire? Tell it to TMZ.

highside - the issue you have is that, sure, it was once news. Now it isn't. Done to death. As were the US team yesterday.

Please, don't take the path of Beaks. It just ends up with lactose intolerancy.

"...and was never informed that McDowell had an ownership stake in the company."

Is that illegal?

**To continue the translation "Paul and Darren have had a falling out but we really want them to be mates again because that would be the best thing for the European Ryder Cup team". This is why Europe wins the Ryder Cup.**

Good observation.

It never ceases to amaze how the Euro fans are able to set aside any and all critical thinking when it comes to their Ryder cup 'boys'. Frankly, I've come to expect more intelligent analysis based on the comments I read the rest of the time here.
09.29.2014 | Unregistered CommenterHilltop
I understand this post and the snide comment about GMac, Rory, Darren, de-facing the flag, etc. It was a painful loss for the US fans on this site so there's a little bit of frustration bubbling over. Having said that, @Oxford Bufties, Xiruluca, Chico, BDF, +12 on your comments.

BrianS, I personally like the customized songs to serenade the European players as well. I'm an American but the "USA" chant gets awfully boring, not to mention, completely void of creativity and fun. I'm surprised the Europeans haven't chanted back, as a response, "BOR - ING", "BOR-ING", yet.

Don't see anything wrong with this. Life is way too short to let petty differences controls one's life.

Maybe The PGA of America and hire GMac to intervene in the Mickelson vs. T. Watson debacle??

I find it unfortunate that the 'feud" has become the story for the 2014 Team USA. Don't think PM really cares about THE Team as he jets off in his private G-5.

@highside "who only care about money and self interest"...... Hard for us to argue.

Phil takes shots at Rory / GMac issue, then throws his Captain under the bus in presser. His self-importance is way over valued.

Interesting thought about the Euros, the Ryder Cup and majors.....With all the success of the European team the past 30 years, the record for majors by a European player is 7 by Harry Vardon...which has stood since 1914....very odd when you think about the great players of the last 30 years. Yet, the Ryder cup has been dominant.
09.29.2014 | Unregistered CommenterHilltop
@ Pro and others - lost in this avalanche of Watson/Mickelson news is what Rosaforte reported on Sunday AM - that Saturday night in the team room, it was Phil that took the lead in chatting with and coaching up all the players (ALL of them) to get up for Sunday and that they still had a chance to win and so on. He (Rosey) made no bones about the fact that Phil stepped up big time. It is a shame that all of this went down - ultimately it may indeed be for the best if positive change comes about- but to imply (based on travel plans) that he didn't care about the team is not true.
09.29.2014 | Unregistered CommenterBrianS
Flag decoration is a sporting tradition in the UK if not all of Europe and long may it continue.

Love to see 'Tranmere Rovers' or 'Toon Army On Tour' added to the Flag of St George - patriotism, club loyalty and a bit of individuality all in one.

Besides, there wasn't a worse use of the Stars and Stripes than Team USA's ugly Xmas sweaters. Mark Darcy thanked his stars he was English.

Flag decoration is indeed a sporting tradition in all Europe. As is butt****ing nuthatches. Only the European variety mind you.

Jamie Diaz' article:

@BrianS 11 guys travel together -- PM travels on his own private plan. Speaks volumes what he feels about the "team concept". Not saying Phil doesn't want to win - he just wants to do it his way, as he always does. He has become the Second Coming of Carnac the Great.

If he some day becomes Captain, will he travel on his private jet or become part of the team and travel with them?

One thing Watson is correct about..."they have to play better" if they expect to win. This includes Mr. Mickelson (16-19-1).

I am a golf fan, and a Phil fan. But he lost credibility with me on this one. Just my opinion.
09.29.2014 | Unregistered CommenterPro from Dover
There was a guy on Sky News tonight who said that what Mickelson stated needed to be said.

Probably correct, but one wonders whether it should have been said in private to Bishop, rather than create a media circus.

It has, of course, over-shadowed all else, and has definitely accentuated the angst that the US feel.

All of which leads me to state that perchance, the anger is over-blown. Yesterday was fun, but today work began again, the sun moved over the yard-arm, more people were born and died...life really is too short to be bent out of shape about a few rounds of golf.

Why not Paul again? Because after three wins as a player, two as a vice-captain and now as a captain he knows he's done enough. He may not be a major winner but he's a very smart guy.
09.29.2014 | Unregistered CommenterJohn
Center Cut....sounds like a guy on the winning side. How should the U.S. react? I'm sure Phil/Tom hasn't overshadowed the win over in Europe. Forgive us here for not continuing to focus on Europe's winning performance. Congrats to them have been given and deservedly so...
09.29.2014 | Unregistered CommenterHilltop
Hilltop, being Australian, I care about as much as you overly do.

No-one who watches the Ryder Cup wins anything apart from some osmotic reaction, as if the feats of the 12 players somehow permeates the spectators psyche, much like the beer. Being a spectators entitles me to just that and that only.

What a load of jingoistic crap you lot spout. Get over it.
09.29.2014 | Unregistered CommenterCenter Cut
Why does anything need to be said to Bishop?

His term is ending, thankfully, though he is the kind to stick around on the scene if at all possible.

It was his "wonderful" idea to bring the out of touch Watson out of mothballs for this RC.

The resulting mess should be laid on his doorstep.

Ditto Pro!

A couple of things. Someone told me today, I didn't see it myself, that Teddy was in TW's cart on the course? Is that true? What a clown!

Talked to a friend who was at the press conference and they said when Mickelson spoke up Teddy didn't know what to do. Many thought he might step up and say, "Hey, Tom was my man, he did what we wanted, we lost but it was a great week.........."
Nothing from the PGA leader.

By the way, there is chatter of a female PGA Pro being on the national elections for officer which would mean a future woman PGA President.
09.29.2014 | Unregistered Commenterol Harv
Yes, Bishop rode around with Watson during the RC, at least on the final day. It just about made me puke when I saw it.

Something tells me the PGA will never get shucked of that self important blowhard.
