"But for SMU, why is the penalty so harsh?"

Here's a solid perspective from Golfweek.com's Lance Ringler on SMU golf's essential death penalty announced this week. He asks if "64 contacts and less than $1,000 in discounts on SMU golf apparel and equipment result in a postseason ban? And for current players that were not even named in the report?"

Ringler also writes:

If you consider the track record at SMU, it might shed more light. SMU has now become the most penalized NCAA member institution in history with its 10th major case. The penalty is not necessarily against the golf program and its members but rather more against the institution.

Also, these sanctions might have been what they were because they were issued along with basketball sanctions.

Of course, SMU will appeal this and while the appeal could be a lengthy and drawn-out process, there is hope for the players that the ban on postseason play could be lifted.

It's rather remarkable that the NCAA is one of the most disliked organizations in sports and American college athletics, and that cases like this one are precisely why people do not care for them.

Every college golfer I have ever met receives equipment discounts and other 'special' privileges.

Interesting. And SMU is getting setup with a training / practice facility at the soon to be completed Trinity Golf Course. Designed by Coore & Crenshaw, this city enabled club is planned to replace the Las Colinas TPC on the PGA tour.

The reason it's not so harsh? I'd imagine it is because they're not Duke, or Notre Dame, or some BIG teevee money school.

They got to make an example of someone. It was a bonehead move to sell FREE clubs. Shiny/flashy clubs swung by potential recruits draws attention ffs. Best to give em a gift card to golf galaxy or somewhere.

Players can't get a free milkshake but the ncaa has 500 million in assets and enjoys 501c tax status and massive salaries at the top. They are more evil than the billionaire owners who get tax payers to partially fund and take on risk for the multi billion dollar stadium deals. The ncaa needs to go

Anyone that mentions the NCAA and student/athletes in the same sentence just ain't paying attention.

In a recent incident, where a small D2 school self reported a violation made by one individual, the ruling was also harsh. Not unfair, but harsh to everyone, past and present, except the one individual who did the wrong. He went on to coach elsewhere.

Adam, which school are you speaking about?

V60, I'm interested in seeing some numbers to support your observations. If the NCAA is a 501C organization you should be able to review and provide salaries for pretty much every employee who makes more than $100K. Sounds like you are on to something....more info please?

The column misses a major point. Neither Coach demonstrated any integrity. Gregory lied on multiple occasions about the relationship he had with the Road To College Golf recruiter. He became lazy after his national championships if even then he had any integrity with players that transferred into Augusta State.

Furthermore, you should SLOW DOWN AND READ the NCAA report on Larry Brown's direct hiring and supervision of his long term assistant that committed the academic fraud.

It takes some time but please SLOW DOWN AND READ the NCAA report. It will give you pause about the role Golf Coaches have with the golf recruiting services.

Wonder what is going on at UNC and they"big" academic fraud that has been uncovered? Been going on there for years! Oh, wait, they are a big-time $$$ basketball producer and God forbid they do anything to harm their former coach's legacy. Smith and Williams are both involved in this scandal. The football and basketball programs are scandalous.

Great line, "We don't pay our players, we don't give them money.. We just give them their own 7-11 store, they can rob it anytime they want"

Brown (another UNC product) left both Kansas and UCLA in a mess. He should be banned, not suspended.

The penalty is "against the institution." What personal consequences will the leaders of the institution suffer? President, Board of Trustees, Athletic Director, etc.?

Envy and jealousy against the physics major golf guy. Wanna be jocks hating on a geek who does it better.
Ringler: "SMU’s next tournament is the Erin Hills Intercollegiate near Milwaukee on Oct. 4-6, and DeChambeau will be in the lineup."

According to the SMU lineup posted at Golfstat for the Erin Hills tournament, DeChambeau is not playing.

NCAA is busy......Louisville basketball scandal (another) just broke this weekend. Will be interesting to see how similar or different the NCAA handles a big time basketball power (UL), vs. SMU. Hall of Fame coaches seem to get a wrist slap and a get out of jail card.......Brown suspended for 9 games? Boeheim at Syracuse? Pitino in 2003? Just there incidents where the NCAA did not put their foot down. Still waiting for the UNC investigation to conclude.

"NCAA’s enforcement is inconsistent and reflects something known as “Fletcher’s Theory of Situational Ethics,” which speaks to decisions based on what works best in the current situation, instead of what the rules would stipulate".

" Smith and Williams are both involved in this scandal."

Do you have proof of this PN? Don't throw out nonsense like that when you don't have any facts. Smith always ran a clean program and stop with the connect the dots stuff with former players and coaches. I suppose Mike K is corrupt as well since Quin Snyder went to Duke and then committed tons of infractions as a coach?

CJK, Want to buy some pristine swamp land in Chapel Hill?......the scandal goes back into Smith's era. Football program mostly involved, but I don't think Smith and Williams are totally innocent. Do you?

Link to full report ...http://abc11.com/education/what-will-the-ncaa-do-about-the-unc-scandal/362926/

I am not "throwing" names. As for "smith always ran a clean program"...............while most allegations involve football players the scandal "reaches back into the final years of Smith's tenure".

Why do you think the "investigation" is taking so long? The inside word is the NCAA is trying to let the heat cool off. Williams had the same academic advisor at Kansas.....what happened there under his tenure?

Nothing was said about Dook. But since you brought it up, Coach K knew "nothing" about the $80K worth of jewelry scandal --- http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaab--mike-krzyzewski-owes-it-to-duke--and-himself---to-investigate-lance-thomas--jewelry-purchase.html

"smith always ran a clean program"

I suspect Dean thought it was clean....but his staff knew. What happened at UNC was widespread academic fraud in its highest form, cannot believe the NCAA has done basically nothing in response.

Fascinating. What's more, SMU is getting setup with a preparation/rehearse office at the impending finished Trinity Golf Course. Composed by Coore and Crenshaw, this city empowered club is wanted to supplant the Las Colinas TPC on the PGA visit.
