The Media Really Liked Jordan Spieth Thursday Morning

The Augusta Chronicle's always superb coverage at Augusta.com included their traditional poll of the writers. This year 26 picked Jordan Spieth to win, more than double the number who thought Rory McIlroy would capture the 2015 Masters. Note the other findings from Scott Michaux's polling of the scribery.

And they really like him after a record-setting 36 at Augusta National.

Steve DiMeglio in the USA Today:

Spieth's total of 130 ties the lowest total after the opening 36 holes in the history of major championships. Martin Kaymer in the 2014 U.S. Open, Brandt Snedeker in the 2012 British Open and Nick Faldo in the 1992 British Open also shot 130.

Further, Spieth equaled the largest lead after 36 holes in tournament history, joining Herman Keiser in 1946, Jack Nicklaus in 1975 and Floyd in '76 as the only players to hold a 5-shot advantage after two rounds.

Keiser, Nicklaus and Floyd all went on to win.

Spieth's second round 66 in three minutes, as Tweeted by The Masters account:

I noticed that Jeff Rude's affiliation is listed as GOLFWEEK. Is he back on staff after the short stint at Back9.

Will be a 2 shot tourney at some point. 2 shots is nothing at Augusta.

That's as positive a putting action as I've seen in quite a while. He's really attacking the hole. If he can win one of these he's going to win a bundle.

Thunderstorms in and around the Augusta area tonight, clearing away by the morning. 10 mph wind dying down to calm by evening. 80F high. Soft greens, ideal weather. -18 under is easily in the reach for Jordan, which is why Eldrick wants the sub-air to be turned on to make the course harder.

I just don't see Spieth backing up. See: Open, Australian. Yeah, not a major, but a truly great performance that should have tipped us off to what we're seeing..
I haven't enjoyed watching someone play golf this much in a long time, maybe since Seve. Much more interesting than watching driver/wedge/driver/wedge all day. Jordan actually uses his brain, imagination and shotmaking to find ways to get at the correct places on the holes to score. That hybrid on 8 to set up the birdie was beautiful. And I don't think there is a putt he doesn't think he can make. "Wyatt Earp" indeed, Mr. Crenshaw...

Whatever happens here between now and Sunday, watch out for Spieth at the Old Course in July - if he does his homework then I think his game may just be a great match.

Patches-I look at Jordan and I have one thought- ''NOBODY MAKES HIM BLEED HIS OWN BLOOD!''

It was pointed out that if the cut was based upon only players within 10 shots of the lead, only 11 players would have made the cut.

Linking to Facebook..... that's your contribution? Exceedingly weak.

Back to the subject at hand. Go look at all the 18 hole and 36 hole leaders at Augusta National. One by one they fall by the waysid. 36 holes means nothing. This not intended to be negative towards an outstanding young player but please remember the green jacket is not handed out Friday night.

Yes, true benseattle. But Spieth on track record is unlikely to choke, So if Spieth goes 70-70, what's the scenario he loses?
Saw him with his sister last week before the last round, and you just thought ''yeah, good bloke''.

Lots more golf to go yet.

@ Chico - ref. my comments regarding McIlroy, Augusta, patience and intelligence...there ya go.

Centre Cut- agreed he hit a lot of very poor shots too long. Bad golf, bad thinking. His career ain't over yet though. Remember when he didn't like links golf? He'll figure it out one day. Interestingly he tutored my member- the British amateur champ- round there all week. He had a lousy week too!!
