St. Andrews Video: Open Wins By Hutchison, Wethered

The build-up to St. Andrews has begun and there is no more sobering reminder of how long people have been playing, loving and wondering about this crazy game than a return to the Old Course. It's overwhelming and even can get quite emotional pondering what St. Andrews has meant to so many lives.

Thankfully, we have the archive of British Pathé films to remind us how long St. Andrews has influenced lives.

Note in this first how much the Claret Jug means to Jock Hutchison, 1921 Open Championship winner, who defeats Roger Wethered(a) in a playoff.

And here is the great Joyce Wethered, sister of Roger, beating Glenna Collett Vare in the finals of the 1929 Ladies Open Championship at the Old Course. Check out the size of that gallery and the rush to the first green!

Can't wait. Last night I googled Ian McShane British Open to watch some of his great ESPN vignettes - it's worth 15 minutes.

One of the things I will miss the most about ESPN losing he Open Championship are those Ian McShane lead ins. The are great.

Great clips Geoff! That is however not the 1929 Ladies Open Championship but rather the 1929 Ladies Amateur Championship.

Yes, it's a matchplay event.

Great swings by the ladies - more aggressive than today's lady golfers.

Great footage Geoff. Given Jock Hutchison's apparent smoking addiction, I'm amazed he lived until the age of 93!

Never mind his golfing ability ... I'm equally in awe of yon fag not falling out of his mouth when hitting his shot.

Joyce Wethered fairly gave the golf ball a good whack. Cecil Leitch was another female golfer who didn't believe in holding back. You Tube footage is well worth a visit. Warning though. The accompanying piece of music is addictive!

Wow, those girls really went after the ball! Great video.

Think they complained about bumping greens?

NIce clip. Did you notice how the golfers were wearing nice jackets that were all baggy from the extra golf balls in the pockets?

Pasa - willing to bet that those greens were "truer" than CB.

Super cool, that must be the match of Ms Wethered's famous "What train?" quote! Can Melvyn verify?

Wonderful clips.
When playing the Old Course, for those of you that haven't, it helps if you think about all the great golfers who have walked those fairways. All those Opens and other championships. The Dunhill Cup and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Embrace those thoughts when you play there, as I have twice so far and hopefully, like me, you will be sweapt away with a golfing experiance you will never forget. It just gets better each time, even when I just visit the place. Well worth the trip to the cemetry to pay respects to Old and Young Tom Morris, Allan Robertson too. A truly special place and a privlidge that even an 80 shooter like me can appreciate.

What a breath of fresh air to see these wonderful videos and super positive for women's golf and forward looking for the Open.

IIRC Bob Jones his own self said that he had never seen a better golf swing than that of Joyce Wethered. Proof:

One version of the quote from Jones: "I have not played golf with anyone, man or woman, amateur or professional, who made me feel so utterly outclassed."

Dear Moderator

You really are something else - I was answering a question raised by Moonface on the subject in hand and your bias petty minded approach has removed golfing information on the subject posted.

Your site and its content must now be viewed for what it is - that IMO is at best questionable and concerns must be raised by its accuracy.

Very Small minded - surprising for someone who has produced a large range of books on the subject of golf and its history - leaving the question are they the product of a bias mind., if so what's their real historic value?

It seems we have come to a parting of the ways - Like it or not my views are backed up by my research, by articles, by facts , they are posted to generate thought, understanding and honest debate. To try and deny history because you do not like the messenger, shows contempt for our readers.

I happily take my leave of your site and so should all who believe in the right of free speech.
You're in good company, Melvyn...

See you soon.
