Your Kneejerk Reactions: Jimmy Walker Wins The PGA

Our second major in a row ends in triumphant, positive fashion with Baltusrol's closing par-5s helping to wash away the stains or a forgettable week for the PGA of America.

I'd like to hear your immediate reactions to the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol won by the likeable 37-year-old astroimager Jimmy Walker, the maiden winner streak, the struggles of the Big Whatever, and the ways you would help the PGA of America find a stronger identity for this championship that too often felt like a regular tour event, only not as well run or telecast.

The win caps off a sensational major season if you look past Jordan Spieth's 12th hole at Augusta and the USGA shenanigans at Oakmont, because Willett, Johnson, Stenson and Walker all played clutch, and at times, historic golf down the stretch to win.

Great concentration and course management. And even better - it wasn't Tiger!

Sure would be interesting to see a PGA Championship at somewhere like Bandon Dunes (if we want to try something new) or Spyglass Hill (if we want an old friend).

Imagine Spyglass Hill with firm/fast greens and without lift, clean, and place.

Well said - PGA C is a glorified tour event.

Don't want to go into all the shortcomings of the PGA and this tournament but if the Masters is the gold standard why don't the powers to be at the PGA reverse engineer what ANGC does and at least simulate it as much as possible but be unique in your own way.

I was in attendance and have been to countless Tour events and majors (except British) and this felt like a regular tour event and run like one.

Would love to have an audience with the powers to be at the PGA and discuss how they could make the PGA C more like a a major. Fixes are not hard.

None of the players complained about the tee times between yesterday and today. If they're not complaining why is everyone on here so quick to judge.

The scoring average was under par for both Rounds 3 and 4. That's ridiculous.

@Patches

Seems to be a quite reasonable explanation. Great win for one of the really nice guys on tour.

Deserving winner, fun to watch.

PGA should select 10 great courses (3 in West, 3 in Central, 4 in East) and stick with a consistent rotation of those 10 courses to foster familiarity. None of the courses selected should be allowed to host other PGA Tour, or USGA tourneys if included in the PGA rotation.

Walker played some great golf this week. At no point did it ever look like someone else might catch him, and not even an eagle on the 18th could get him to blink. I thought he did really well staying composed and playing like someone should play with a 3-shot lead on Sunday in a major. Initially I second-guessed his second shot into the 18th, but looking back on his decision - there really wasn't an area he couldn't comfortably make par from anywhere around the green, and that was obviously all he needed. It wasn't exactly a high-risk shot.

Not much of a fan of the back-to-back par5 finishing holes. It sounds good, looks good on paper, and might produce the desired drama in a tightly contested match... but not when a player from the final group comes into those final two holes with a 3-shot cushion. As exciting as Day's eagle was at the last, it wasn't enough to cause Walker to choke.

Taking nothing away from his win today, but there was probably a slight advantage with not having to sleep on the lead the night before the final round. But on that same token - 36 holes of golf under that type of pressure takes a lot of focus and positive energy. I thought he handled everything required of him very well.

And it's always good to see genuine sportsmanship on display afterward. As much as Day, Spieth and Fowler desperately wanted to win this week, they didn't miss an opportunity to show some appreciation for someone else's life-changing moment.

Way to go, Jimmy!

Day hits 2 iron, 2 iron into the par 5 closer . . . But according to the USGA the ball isn't a problem. Lol

A very Deserving winner!!!
Matsuyama could have won it easily if he made the putts.
I will say this for CBS - their pro tracer - when they use it (not enough) is way more accurate than Fox.

Broadly speaking, as a group, you all are a bunch of miserable fucks.

Great win Jimmy Walker.

re: Royal Melbourne, or anywhere on the great sand belt, the grass is dormant this time of year. It'd be like playing Pinehurst in January.

I was bored. Too bad the rain impacted the course so much. Saw Stenson suck back a 7 iron and players were holding approach shots from the deep rough. Tourney was also too close to the last major. No buildup. No buzz in the broadcast. As others have said felt like a marquee regular event.

Dumb story, no organization should be locked into only a small amount of courses

Indeed there was nowhere around that green complex where Walker easily couldn't have played to the green from. Man, you should have seen the 20-handicappers on Twitter reacting to the play. Comparisons to Jean Van de Velde were everywhere, Silliness was rampant.

I just cannot see the PGA of America being anything close to visionary and moving their championship out of the US. First, the majority of the sponsor money is in the US. Similar sponsorship money may be available if you moved into the Middle East or China. Then, every American would complain that their PGA is being held elsewhere and the viewing times are not convenient. It would be better for world golf but I cannot imagine it's ever going to happen. No way 3 of the 4 majors should be in the US but for a long time they have had the biggest and best Tour.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterKg
Yes, yes, by all means return the PGA to match play. (eyes rolling)

I'm sure the networks would just love the ratings when they get a Sam Sausage-Joe Blow final, lol.

USA Olympic contestants are now 9-12 in Ryder Cup points standings. Davis Love III would be wise not to knock one of them off the team, it will be an interesting month.

The fact that Walker and his caddy met at the 2000 US Am at Baltutrol is a nice touch.

CBS would be out of golf if it did not have The Masters contract.

Noticed no mention of Ryder Cup by the CBS team as it is broadcasted by NBC, also no FedEx cup mentions either which was a nice change.

Agree 100% on the questions about the PGA needing more Western venues for TV, weather and interest. I'll throw Colorado Golf Club, LaCosta, Pumpkin Ridge and Eugene as possibilities.

If you don't think this is the 4th Major check out social media metrics.

Brandel mentioned a short putt Walker needed one time to keep his card. Griffith Park (LA), CordeValle, Castle Pines, maybe Utah could be added

@Ian B

I believe the idea was to move it to a different time in the year when conditions and daylight would be better. The Victoria Open is usually held in February. I think in the Olympic years the USPGA will be held in February or March from now on.

To me the weekend was about making lemonade out of the lemons created by the weather, the schedule (2 weeks after Troon) and the PGA's desire to have a late Sunday finish. I have great respect for the guys and their caddies who had to slog thru 36 holes on that saturated track with "bababooay" being yelled after every tee shot. The top guys really did play one shot at a time and focused for what had to be a long day. When JW plays like this I always wonder why he doesn't win more often. He has a great all around game and putts 4 footers like they are kick-ins.
Looking forward this event needs a West Coast location almost every year due to the date. As best I can tell they don't do it because the PGA VP's don't want to travel.

When did Rickie Fowler become Texan? LOL. They could of at least spelled his name right. What a stupid cliched headline.

@PG .. Did Brandel offer up a way to pay for the renovations that Griffith Park would require to hold an event like the PGA?
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterOWGR Fan
Unless and until the PGA of America merges with one of the other world "PGAs"' to form a global organization, the event will continue be held here in the US, and rightfully so. If they want to play in Feb, there are plenty of places in the US that work.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterBrianS
@Ian McCallister...'I think in the Olympic years the USPGA (sic) will be held in February or March from now on'

You are basing this on what exactly?

If any major should be moving around the world it would be the Open Championship since many are fond of referring to it as some kind of 'world open'. After all America is right in the title of the PGA whereas the Open Championship is non site specific.

Right?

Griffith hosted Special Olympics and Wilson course would be Olympic site should LA land '24 Summer Games
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterPG
Why should the PGA be considered a major? It was a major when it was the tournament run by the players' own organization. But, since the tour players split off from the PGA of America in the late '60s, that is no longer the case.

The fact is that there are only three majors rights now.

The PGA of America has repeatedly said they are considering moving the tournament during Olympic years. They have said they wanted to have a test run and see how the compressed schedule worked out this year. The 2020 tournament is in San Francisco, perfect for a March or February date. Seeing that the compressed schedule has taken some buzz out of the event I conclude that it will be held in 2020 in February or March.

As for the Open being the world championship of golf. At this moment in history I don't believe that is the case. Although when it was started that was certainly the purpose of the tournament, to identify the best golfer among the participating clubs after the death of Allan Robertson. Prior to this there was a periodic de facto championship settled by challenge matches. With the expansion of the game across the globe I don't believe it is the world championship of the sport. Thus my advocating for the creation of one by changing the USPGA to a WPGA.

The Amateur championship has been held in the Republic of Ireland so there is precedent. I believe that more important than the Open being held in the UK is that it be held on a true links course. There are courses in Ireland and the Netherlands that fit this definition.

@Tom "The fact is that there are only three majors rights now."

LOL. Tell that to the players.

Why was Peter Kostis interjecting himself in the proceedings? Walking into 18 to talk to WLker and the cameras caught it all. Seemed to cross a line there. Nantz didn't acknowledge it!!
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterOB
@Ian...of course it's far from certain that golf will be in the Olympics after 2020 and I'm not so sure that February or even March in San Francisco is ideal weather wise for something as important as a major championship. Just look at the mixed bag of weather the Pebble Beach event has gotten over the years in late February. August in SF on the other hand is pretty good weather wise. Probably would be better to have the PGA in 2020 on what would be the equivalent of next week and then the Olympic participants can take the relatively short trip to Tokyo from SF. Or even flip the men and women Olympic golf and have the women go first. By this scenario there would be two weeks between the Open and the PGA which has been the format many years. It really needn't be like this year and I never understood why the PGA couldn't have been this coming week.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterGriffin
@Griffin
I don't know the answers about the IOC scheduling of golf. Those are good questions and I would like to know the answers. I do believe that the PGA of America picked Harding Park in part to have flexibility as to when to hold the tournament in the year. If it was in the north east we would know that it couldn't be held in the early part of the year.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterIan McAllister
Talk of staging a PGA Championship outside the United States, bringing a major event beyond US and British borders for the first time, has cooled, Bevacqua said.

“Will a PGA Championship ever happen internationally? Who knows,” he said.

“Is it something that will happen in the immediate future? I would say no. It has certainly been placed on the back burner for the time being.”
More examples of the class acts Spieth and Fowler are: waiting to offer congratulations to JW. Another point that golf in 2016 is in a very good place. Golf is a game of honor and gentlemen and gentleladies.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterGolfBald
The PGA just needs buildup, and as long as it's stubbornly scheduled between the British Open and the start of football (I don't know when that is, but I've learned to realise that it's a big deal over there!) it's not going to get it. The ideal spot on the calendar is the date currently occupied by The Players, which isn't working that great for Sawgrass. If the PGA was moved to that May date and The Players moved back to it's old position in late March and injected a much-needed shot in the arm to the Florida Swing, I think many parties would benefit. Other than that, not much else you can do as it's already played on great courses, has arguably the best field in the game and always seems to produce a dramatic finish.
