Your Kneejerk Reactions: Jimmy Walker Wins The PGA

Our second major in a row ends in triumphant, positive fashion with Baltusrol's closing par-5s helping to wash away the stains or a forgettable week for the PGA of America.

I'd like to hear your immediate reactions to the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol won by the likeable 37-year-old astroimager Jimmy Walker, the maiden winner streak, the struggles of the Big Whatever, and the ways you would help the PGA of America find a stronger identity for this championship that too often felt like a regular tour event, only not as well run or telecast.

The win caps off a sensational major season if you look past Jordan Spieth's 12th hole at Augusta and the USGA shenanigans at Oakmont, because Willett, Johnson, Stenson and Walker all played clutch, and at times, historic golf down the stretch to win.

Came in late. No repairing of leaders for final round? Lift, clean and place? Play the mud ball..
Walker has paid his dues...well done.
Baltusrol? Great course, not too photogenic...sorry NJ.
Take this tournament west....more often.
PGA officials love their TV time!

CONGRATS JIMMY WALKER --- DESERVING AND CLUTCH WIN -- GOOD ONYA FELLA!!!

As a complete aside, incredible props to Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, and Rickie Fowler for hanging around to congratulate the winner as he came off #18....wow, gives me a whole new perspective on all 3...incredibly well done.

Away from that, what a great Championship the PGA ran. Best field in the history of golf, battled the elements, incredible course and facility -- delivered a class champion -- not a big fan of the organization but good onya here PGA!!

One more props....what an incredible iron Jason Day hit into 18 green! Wonder where that was in proximity to the Nicklaus 1-iron plaque?

JW was as solid as solid gets down the stretch. Worthy major winner, but where has this kind of game been this year? Another flag for the bay at 2651 Grand Hills Dr.

Yes to more West Coast. How about Riviera once again?
Deserving winner. Dramatic putt on 17, with a whisker-thin last-nanosecond make. Was it a van de Veldian decision on 18? (I know, I know, JvdV had terrible luck in hitting the railing and getting a one-in-a-thousand bad bounce.) What did his caddy say?

Good for him, hope it's good for the Ryder Cup.

As great as Day's iron was into 18, imagine if he had been paired with Walker when he did that! Same can be said for Walker's putt on 17. Finishing on Sunday should not take precedence over perpetrating a championship the right way.

Lift clean and place has no business in a major, IMO. But that's ok, because CBS made this feel more like the Colonial than a major, so I guess it fits.

In the end, the best player for the week won, so I guess none of the teeth gnashing matters. PGA, R and A and USGA all did an excellent job identifying the best player this year.

Wire to wire winner, and vey deserved. A slow developer until he started winning in 2014 and from the reception at the end from players and officials a good guy. He earned it

It is funny how many people here ripped the PGA yesterday for not doing something pro-actively to make sure they got the round in, specifically 3'somes off of both tees or maybe just moving up the times. So today they do that by not re-pairing - which saved a bunch of time, given how dark it was, likely ensuring today made it in under the wire (they got lucky no playoff). Would it have been nice to have the top 2 guys together ? Sure, but this wasn't like the Open with Phil and Stenson, it was at least a 3 or 4 person race at the beginning of they day.

Well done by Jimmy Walker, and also by Day for making the ending special.

Brian,

It's only funny if it's the same people from yesterday.

This tournament would have been much better if it had been played toward the end of August. It would have more build up, and would have been separated from the Open Championship. The schedule really sucked the life out of this one, which is inexcusable.

At least it had a really good field, and Baltusrol is a fine course. Better, IMHO, than Valhalla and some of the other lesser PGA courses.

A really fine player won. I am happy for him. Sort of hope he has a better future than Danny Willett, but I have nothing against Danny Willett.

I wish he would lose the beard.

Impressive. I remember seeing Jimmy at our local Web.com event many years ago. Hooked it into the pond bordering the green of a par 3. Seems to have lost that shot. Also impressed with Fowler and Speith hanging around to congratulate their friends although I'm sure Clacker is going to post that Jordan did that because he knew it would be televised or his advisors told him it would look good.

Jimmy Walker, the latest in a line of first time Major Winners who certainly have been very good for a long time. I don't know this stacks up to the DJ win or the Stenson-Phil Battle, but Day provided a memorable moment and Walker as a champion will continue to get attention this year at the Ryder Cup. Speaking of, I found the Ryder Cup storylines and points available to be the most interesting thing on the weekend. With the schedule this year I look forward to the RC as the last big event.

The PGA this year more than any other due to the schedule felt like just another tournament and the parties involved did nothing to help. The weather situation forced the PGA to make calls about pairings, tee times, and lift clean place - all stuff that made the tournament feel less than Major. Throw in the broadcast, CBS going to commercials with the same music used every weekend, just minimized any excitement. Wonder if ratings will reflect as much because I can't imagine too many casual viewers saw it was on and realized it was a Major.

Playing the PGA on the West Coast would be unique, as would showcasing new venues. The USGA goes back to many historic courses and I'd like to see the PGA go to new spots.

Looking ahead to the Olympics Phil, Walker should have had the opportunity to go.

I want Justin Thomas on the RC team - made cuts in all 4 majors. Will be interesting to see if he, Fowler and Reed all get on. Walker and Koepka secured spots this week. I have a bad feeling one of the JT/Fowler/Reed trio is getting left off. Honestly it should be Fowler.

I like Walker and am happy for him. But I feel like long-term the PGA Championship risks losing its major status if this mismanagement continues. I'd recommend dumping CBS for a more innovative network that will cut the commercial times, and then playing some interesting courses that we haven't seen before (similar to Whistling Straits the first time it was there). Now it's just U.S. Open-style courses that aren't quite good enough for the Open.

Could also consider a later date to space it out more from the British Open.

One plus: I like the club pro element. It's the PGA's field quirk like the lifetime exemptions for past champions at the Masters and British and qualifiers at the U.S. Open. Makes them stand out some from the PGA Tour drudgery.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlie Smith
Worthy champion. Wayyy too many commercials. Great golf course but too back-loaded with the only two par 5's the last two holes. Nothing memorable about this event.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterJC
Mark,
You want the PGA of America to hold a tourney in Australia?
Good event, good course. I would love to see the PGA try to get back to some of the classics in the west, not Sahalee, not Torey Pines but their are other options.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterKg
Golf from when I woke up at 7 to 4pm, nice.

The course doesn't provide much drama, Jason Day looked fine when it was over but he's going feel he let a major slip by by failing to really apply any pressure until the 18th.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteveR
Great win for Walker! The fact that they finished today with the lousy forecast also kind of justifies their decision yesterday as it really was a crapshoot with the weather and the storms. Sometimes the best choice is to just do nothing and hope for the best. And even with them playing LCP and the wet conditions the final twosome finished in just a little over four hours and it really felt like things were moving along unlike sometimes with LCP. As for the LCP both Kostas and Pepper mentioned that there were numerous times where the mud on the ball was extreme and I can't see how that is fair when it is so random. Is it ideal? No, but sometimes you just have to do what it takes under the circumstances.

Yes, this tournament is the one that should be embracing the west coast as August is the perfect weather month (much more so than June). Remember Riviera once and Sahalee also but not much other than that.

Reading people complain about commercial load and annoying commercials makes me wonder if any of these people have heard the mute button and the DVR. I record every golf tournament I watch and will give it some time and then start watching so I can fast forward through the commercials and the other nonsense. Tournaments just zip along that way.

And even if you don't or can't DVR it you can still hit mute when the commercials come on so you won't be enraged by that watch commercial or whatever it is that is always being complained about here.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterGriffin
I actually agree with holding the PGA in a different country occasionally (even though it is the PGA of America). Before the wrap-around season, you could have done it in Nov-Dec. and there would have been huge excitement for it.

The other thing that would work is a return to match play. I understand that there is the contractual problem that the WGC event has a monopoly on match play, but they could work around that. For all the complaining about how match play is bad for TV, someone needs to explain how the Open this year was so entertaining, considering all we heard was "this is essentially match play between Phil and Stenson." If you get two players who are playing well and there are huge stakes on the line (a major), then there is nothing better for TV than match play.

And obviously, all of the above comments are well taken. When the new TV contract comes up in the near future, they need to consider other networks. CBS doesn't do it justice because it has to play second-fiddle to the Masters on their lineup, but it's also more important than a WGC event, or the Memorial (which they treat as more important, IMO). The last couple years, they even did away with the old PGA Champ. music they used to have. And what can you say about TNT? Amateur from the start. Golf Channel and NBC did a tremendous job with the Open: They had coverage with remarkable breadth and depth; not to mention they hold TV rights for all of the other PGA events (senior,, women's, Club Pro champ, and Ryder Cup). It's a natural fit.

I like Walker a lot but I was bored to tears. Until Day's last putt, nobody made an aggressive move all day. Walker played very good but it's impossible to know how he would have dealt with the pressure if he were playing with Day.

Baltusrol is fine. It's kind of annoying that Walker's -14 isn't -22 because they played 1 and 7 as Par 4's when they're members Par 5's. I've had it up to here with that.

Echo the other sentiments that the space from The Open and the weather took the rhythm away from it's status as a major.

Great performance by Jimmy Walker. Glad to see him get it up and down on 18, but a very strange decision on the second shot for such a seasoned player. Would be interested to know what he was thinking.

I spent Fri. and Sat. morning at Baltusrol. I hadn't been there before but I would say the course is much better in person than on TV. While it was a major, it didn't feel like it much of the time. Many holes had 1/2 empty grandstands and some of the better (but not top) players had only a few dozen people following them. I followed the Rose/Schwartzel group on Sat. and there was really no problem following along the entire time without running into any crowds. I've been to the Masters and a few US Opens and the fans seemed a lot more into it (and more of them). The transportation to Baltusrol could have been better. We parked about 15 miles away and took a 35 minute bus ride to the "gate" which was almost a 20 minute walk to the course. Some of the grandstands were in bad places as there were trees blocking the view and yo could't even see the players hitting their shots in.

Now watching it on TV today I would agree with many that it seems like a regular Tour event. CBS did OK but nothing special. Way too many commercials as well.

No doubt Walker deserved to win, but this will be a major that is not remember much in the future.

Walker win was more impt for our Ryder Cup hopes than anything else. Walker was stellar at GlenEagles and mercifully bumped Kuchar off the team. Until the last three holes, Sunday was a total snoozer. PGA got a deserving winner, but playing 36 holes on a drenched golf course totally sucked the nuance out of the event. CBS/TNT never do this tournament any favors. The continuous commercials during this tournament never change; TNT should never televise golf again. Ryder Cup: Hoping Reed and Koepka will earn one an automatic spot/captain's pick. Could care less about watching Olympic Golf without Rory, DJ or Speith and I don't blame them for not going.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterPinehurst2014
@Laurel Creek...they aren't playing Quail Hollow twice next year the Wells Fargo tournament is being played on a course in Wilmington, NC I believe. A bigger issue I have is that with the exception of Pebble Beach I don't like playing majors on courses that also host regular Tour events as it takes away from the specialness of a major in my opinion.
07.31.2016 | Unregistered CommenterGriffin
Lift clean and place has no place in a major. Nor does advancing every tee 15-30 yards. But in the end, a wonderful winner, despite the PGA's efforts make a defenseless course even easier.

I watched the Womens British Open, which was fantastic (yes, Geoff, they played a major this week, too!) and then played 27. Caught Walker making the putt at 17 and Day hitting that fabulous approach on 18 and stayed with it to the end. Even for that short a time, Nantz was a pain. Great win for Jimmy. Nice guy, nice player. Maybe time to revert back to match play at the PGA. That would make it stand out.

@ Ace - Walkers own words about 18

http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=122105

Q. Interesting there at the 18th, what was that all about?
JIMMY WALKER: Said just send it up there as far as we can. I'm a great bunker player and good pitcher of the ball. The ball just came out a little more right than I wanted to and made it a little more exciting. You figure 19 out of 20 times, I'll make a five going for the green there.

@ DTF - Day was around 20 yards further back from where Jack was. Jacks shot was from 237 or 238 yards depending on what article one reads and Days was from 258 or so.

Ace:

A complete guess, but possibly JW was thinking just blow it down there to where he couldn't reasonably miss the green with his third? He didn't have to get up and down to win.

That saying, where the 2nd shot ended up left him a 3rd shot where he couldn't be 100% sure exactly how that wedge would come out of there, but he still only had to hit the green.
While I agree with others that CBS treats this tournament too much like just another PGA Tour event but I'm not sure how that is different from what GC/NBC did with the Open Championship. Just like a regular NBC telecast we got Feherty hijinks and lame Peter Jacobsen 'comedy' bits and promos for that stupid ninja program just as CBS did there promos. I would think that both networks would want to create something special and different with a major championship broadcast but I guess not.

OWGR:

Thanks for the link. Makes some sense, no?
Hoped to use the PGA App to lessen frustration w/TNT and CBS commercial-fest, but it was by far the worst app of the four majors.
1. The Twitter feed never worked properly, 2. the choice of "Feature Groups" was the same all day Sunday 3. Live Scoreboard: Clicking on a player's name gave you only his scorecard for the present round ONLY (this was even more frustrating today obviously as 3rd/4th Rd overlapped). All the other majors let you a player's performance on each hole from EVERY round. 4. The app always defaulted to opening to the Featured Pairings instead of the Real Time Scoreboard (stupid). Finally, I could never find a course tour or hole layout feature on PGA app which is essential anytime but esp at a course many of us were unfamiliar with. PGA overall is way behind the times in using technology in the broadcast and on 2nd screens!

I would also advocate a move to outside of the U.S and U.K. especially to Royal Melbourne. A more reverent tone, less commercials and better venues would all aid in adding gravitas to the event. I believe not having Day in the final pairing really helped Walker.

Great for Jimmy Walker, Good playing from Day, nice to see the handshakes behind the 18th green(JD, RF, JS)

This did not feel very Major like. CBS looks like they are ready to dump golf.
