Auction: Chandler Egan's Olympic Medals Available

Hey how about that opening bid for the 1904 Olympic golf gold.

The current top bid for the silver is $20,000. (Same cool design, same amazing artifact from the noted player and architect.)

I don't get it. On Leland's website page, both the silver and the gold are listed as "presented to Chandler Egan." (As of 9:50 p.m. ET Wednesday.) Even reading the fine print doesn't help.

The gold for individual golf went to George Lyon of Canada. Egan won the individual silver. A US team of 10 golfers from the Western Golf Association won the gold for the team event. Egan was part of that team. So this must be the gold from the team event

There was no official Olympic golf at St. Louis in 1904! The Olympic Games were held between August 29 and September 3. Period. The rest of the "Olympic" competitions were part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The golf competition was held by Glen Echo Country Club. It was called the Glen Echo Olympic Competition. Look at the medals. Where does it say IOC? Why were the medals and trophies presented by the Glen Echo club and not the IOC, like the Games held on the dates mentioned?

As Olympic medals, these ones on sale are 100% fake. As medals representing the second year of Glen Echo's International competition, they might be worth something. The Glen Echo Olympic team competition continued for decades under the W.G.A.. The IOC gave George Lyon's family a new gold medal in the 1990s, after they claimed his were lost. He never had any. Now the Canadian golf association has them. Fake news. Fake history. Phoo!
