CBS Rolling Out Some Golf Refreshments

After three weeks of exclusively Golf Channel broadcasts, the PGA Tour turns over the keys to CBS for the next five weeks (Honda Classic is on CBS this year due to the Olympics on NBC) and plans to roll out a few refreshments to its broadcasts.

The Forecaddie with details of the two big boosts--Amanda Balionis becoming a full-time interviewer after an extensive tryout last year, and we're getting 18-hole Trackman data.

There is also a special request for a sooner-than-later golf debut from Tony Romo.

Ms. Balonis makes for an excellent addition. She did a fine job on CBS in her debut last year. Trackman is a plus also. While CBS desperately needs some new blood in the golf announcer crew, whether Romo calling golf will be a plus remains to be seen. I grew tired of him late in the year on the NFL broadcasts. Too much hyping of the underdogs at the start of the game followed by excessive fawning over the victors at the end. The endless predictions of play calls also grew worn as the year went on. I watched much f the AFC Championship yesterday with the sound muted.

Golf Channel seems to be the training ground for most upcoming TV golf commentators. I understand David Duval does not want to work as often as CBS would require so the #1 prospect is probably not available. The two best analysts on there currently are Kratzert and Blackmar but both are getting on in years. Not really a fan of Isenhauer, and Oberholser is better but not by much. The most versatile and perhaps best suited for an hole tower role might be George Savaricas, with Bob Papa also being a possibility.

@digsouth - the only part of the Sony I saw was the unfortunate strike-bound Sunday night playoff with Savaricas, Kratzert and Gallagher calling the action remotely from Orlando. It was painful to watch but Savaricas impressed me. That was a tough gig. I do enjoy listening to Big'Un, he really is good. I am not a fan of Nobilo for some reason. Maybe saw too much of his jousting with Chamblee and not coming off well, I'm not sure. I do think he's a decent guy though.

Ever since Feherty left CBS - McCord has had no one to work off of... I think Romo could pull that off.
