Report: Organizers Expect To Keep Playing Genesis Open Even After Tiger's Missed Cut

Multiple sources are confirming on deep background that the Genesis Open will carry on with the likes of Spieth, McIlroy, Johnson and Thomas making the weekend and still very much able to make a run at leaders Cantlay, McDowell and Saunders.

With a stellar weather forecast, firm, fast greens and some clever architectural problems to solve, organizers decided to forge ahead even after Tiger Woods posted a second round 76. My Golfweek report on a bad day for Woods on the greens, with his irons and the driver, where the misses weren't as bad but brought in the left side of the course.

For all the cute kids and their parents who came out to see a legend, there were more yahoos than normal on Friday and it gave Rory McIlroy a headache, notes The Forecaddie.

While some major star power is lurking dangerously, co-leader Graeme McDowell is one of the more exciting stories of the weekend. Eamon Lynch's Golfweek game story sets up what should be a fun weekend.

Ha...very nice Geoff.
I get that Golf Channel makes serious coin being all Tiger all the time, but the coverage the last 2 days was really ridiculous.

Every time that Tiger plays for the next couple of years, the coverage WILL be ridiculous.

But no one can argue that Tiger draws eyeballs. So do train wrecks.

Strange, I coulda sworn I saw this site leaping onto the Tiger Bandwagon earlier this week..

Anyway, drunken buffoons and the PGA Tour ...go hand-in-hand these days. At least the anti-social types don't bring their guns....

Cantlay summed up very nicely--"“I’m hitting it really well right now. Ball’s coming out of the middle of the clubface and it’s going where I’m looking,”

Well that's it. I'm done with Tiger. After four back surgeries, a couple of tournaments is all we need to see that's its over. It's over, right? Right? Oh.

It’s half past noon on a beautiful February Saturday here in Pacific Palisades, morning errands, youth baseball and swimming lessons for the kids are done, I’m ready to settle in with Jim Nantz... so why oh why is CBS showing me Alabama-Kentucky?

What’s up w CBS? They keep showing golf shots.

"What’s up w CBS? They keep showing golf shots."

With a DVR, you can easily skip over the occasional golf shot and just watch the commercials....

Good to see Geoff on Golf Channel today at Geneis. We know he loves it there. Exciting to see Bubba back again and watching DJ move up from about 50 on the leaderboard on Friday to tied for 7 today on Saturday. Will be watching on Sunday!!!

Sorry Hardy and co (old grouches), I'd still rather watch Tiger shoot a 76 than Bubba Finau blast his 3 wood / sand wedge around Riviera...

Hey...Mungo Park...watching Bubba is a lot of fun! We all know Tiger is great and all watching but he didn't make the cut and we look forward to seeing him next week.

6 threads with tiger mentioned in the titles on the first page

Must still be drawing some eyeballs

Well Mungo, you just go right on living in the past....

I watched the Cantalay group on 10 on TV. That green needs rework. There is no reason decent pitches end up off the green 30 yards in a different direction.

If Tiger misses the cut next week, the reactions will be quite interesting.

If I were playing and watched the first day on tape, I would have played everything that has ''minimal break'' inside the hole-- if you low side it - oh well, but all te guys were blazing it on the pro side--good putts- poor over reads-- anyone who realizes this, and putts well should be able to post 3-6 strokes better on Sunday''' @600 hr, that'll be 19.95///

I have a crazy theory. It pertains to the attempt to rejuvenate the glamor of a former superstar whose career became moribund. My theory is that the best way to revitalize this superstar’s career is to employ a low key approach; keep the spotlight off him until he’s shown that he has escalated his game to the point where he can compete with the bright stars of the current golf world. Let him play a supporting role until he regains his footing.

Conversely, this crazy theory states that the absolute worst way to ensure his return to glory would be to constantly place him in the spotlight, to raise expectations to an unsustainable level, to put him in groupings where he feels compelled to compete against his playing partners individually instead of plotting for a 4 round aggregate score that could place him in contention.

I say this theory is crazy because it will never be acted upon. All the ratings eggs will be placed in the Tiger basket. And the chances are that this 42 year old golfer, with a completely reshaped body, will continue to struggle under the unreasonable conditions the various golfing bodies place him in.

Does anyone really think the current Tiger strategy is a viable one for long term success?

I would pay someone to yell “mashed potatoes” during the Masters. It would be worth the price just to see the poor SOB get tazed.

Figgster - There just isn't a way for Tiger to low key it. The media can't keep his name out of their mouth and neither can we. Shoot, half the comments on this thread have Tigers name in them and he missed the cut two days ago.

My $0.02 is he needs to play competitive rounds. DJ hasn't played that much since last season, but he has more tournament rounds since just before last Halloween than Tiger has played in 3 years.

He's playing next week. He'll probably play API. If he's serious about Augusta, he should go to Puntacana the week of the match play. That's about as low key as he'd ever find with most of the golf media elsewhere.
Any truth to Stormy Daniels looping for Tiger at the Honda?
