Lewis On Travelers and 84 Lumber Dynamics

Sexy header eh?

The Scorecard Always Lies author Chris Lewis offers some intriguing insights into Traveler's birth at the expense of the 84 Lumber Classic, something Bruce Berlet commented on in a recent SI Golf Plus. Oh and Dave Marrandette review's Lewis' book here.

Yeah. All I get from the links is the book's page at Amazon and a bounce back to Bruce's article.

Jeese, you guys are so picky. You want me to actually link to the post I'm highlighting!?

Hopefully I've at least got the link to Chris's site working...

Here's my review of the book: I can't trust it when simple, well-known facts are so blatantly wrong. In this book, Chris Lewis writes:

a) Tiger Woods hit from "the rough" (if memory serves, it was not just rough, but "gnarly" rough) over the water at the Canadian Open. We all know he hit from a bunker.

b) Phil Mickelson's full-swing, 3-foot flop shot at The Memorial on Saturday (2006) was at the 10th hole. It was at the 18th.

c) Payne Stewart holed a 40-footer at Pinehurst on the last green to win. We all know it was about 14-15 feet.

There were other errors, too. And I'm not even done with the book. But he gives credit to Geoff as being a good blogger, so I suppose some circular back-patting is in order, eh?

Oh, and the link Geoff really wants to add is this one:

Larry - are you sure about "b" above? I don't think it was on 18 ...
06.25.2007 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
It wasn't on 10. I'm fairly certain it was on 18. You know, the green where Nick O'Hern holed it this year from the bunker by hitting it to the back fringe and letting it release back down to the hole. Most greens at Muirfield Village aren't sloped quite as heavily as the 18th. If 18 is wrong, 10 certainly is, and A and B are still valid.

But please, don't let this get off-topic. I too wish the 84 Lumber still existed - it was a good tournament, Joe Hardy took care of the players, and I've played the course and think it's one of the more interesting courses the Tour played.

Check my name for a report.

I never thought a golf writer's role would include defending multiple Tour events that have been eviscerated by the PGA Tour.

Mark my word on this: a day is coming where PGAT will be ass-kissing like Larry King to find organizations willing to operate its events AND title sponsors willing to pony up purse amounts similar to what they're paying today. ABC/ESPN has already seen the writing on the wall.

I wonder if The Timothy knows his business model, NASCAR, is not selling out most of its venues anymore.

Pretty sure Mickelson's flop shot was on the 10th that year. He also holed a bunker shot from an awful lie, in the same round; that might have been the one on 18 (or 17).

It may have been. Could have sworn it wasn't. Either way, Tiger still hit from a bunker and Payne's putt wasn't even half of 40 feet.

But really guys, how about that Travelers tournament? :-)

Mickelson's plugged bunker shot was on the 16th in the final round. And I'm sorry to say that I don't give a rat's ass about Hartford and Hardy.

Wow, Larry Mize! In response to his and one or two other notes (especially about Payne's putt), I've created an errata page on my website. It's
