2010 Ryder Cup Monday, Open Thread

If you think I'm getting up at 1 a.m., think again. The DVR is set for USA network and with the fast forward button at my finger tips, I should be caught up by 4 a.m....after the 3 a.m. alarm goes off!

Over/under on when the Americans are closed out? I'm setting the line at 8:05 a.m. ET.

This tournament would be pretty much unwatchable for me without the DVR.
I hope in the future they broadcast golf tournaments on an extra channel with just the ambient sound. I think I've got a carpel tunnel situation situation going on from hitting the mute button so often when McCord is babbling on CBS.

Dont see it as a foregone conclusion for we Euros.
Cant believe Woods,Mickleson etc will play as badly today.
Estimated time for me to have chewed my fingers to the bone-about 9.30 am.

As I said in a previous post: US have got 7½ points in the singles in five of the last eleven cups, so it's foolish to think that it's over. If they can build some sort of momentum in the first few matches, look out.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterHawkeye
Oaf Overton is not fist-pumping right now. And media complain about slow play by Europe...how about Jim Furyk? He's in. He is out. He is back in again, keeping camera men guessing. I would hate to play with him.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMulligan
The Euros are out of the gate smokin. It could be a bad day at black rock for the USA.

"It isn't a fair fight!"
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMulligan
An interesting week of golf is almost over...Euros are going to win because they appear to be finishing off their holes very well while team USA is.....uh....not so productive. I was going to post something about the importance of putting but I came accross this post earlier today:

..."A few things..I have been an avid fan of the Ryder Cup for over 20 years and I attended the matches in 2008 at Valhalla. No one has been more overated and hyped over the last 4 cups than Phil. Face it, the guy shuts it down after the PGA. When he had success early on in his career at the Cup he was one of the best putters on tour..in the last ten years not so much. When his flat stick co-operates he wins. Why can't the US team figure out four balls? When you partner rolls one up stiff that is a free run at birdie for you. How can you leave it short, over and over again?..Par is already good idiots!..My Father, with whom I played many a best ball as a partner, taught me this when I was just a kid...US Captains picks: Length means absolutely nothing in the Cup..is there a metaphor for less than nothing? As a captain your four picks should come staight from one list. Forget World Rankings..Money Lists..Walker Cups..yadda, yadda yadda...Select at least the 3 best ranked putters that aren't on the team..I will give you a fourth for a special player you like but this Cup is won on the moss people, particularly in the team formats. D. Johnson (see U.S.Open and PGA..yeah he was standing in a bunker at the Straits but that bunker was so far out of play he would have been OB on 90% of the courses I have played or seen!) and Mickelson couldn't find the fairway or the hole with a compass, map and flashlight..so we paired them together? We should definately play the Ryder Cup before that bloated monster known as the playoffs for the Fedex Cup (when is that thing gonna die already?!)..Memo to Finchem and Fedex...nobody(and I mean absolutely nobody!) cares...except the guy cashing the 10 mill. ..."

Pretty much sums it up nicely. I'll add that the days of american dominance in golf are over....too many decent players coming up from overseas who aren't jaded golfers by the time they're in their early twenties. The rest of the world is hungry and don't care if greens are slow or the fairways too long/wet/etc....they WANT to be playing at the highest level and revel in it....damn the conditions and circumstances.

John is right.

Having Woods still ranked #1 is just another example of how things are set up to keep someone undeserving at the top, just to milk the Woods hype for all they can. Now we see how the greatest golf event going has been sidetracked to October for the same reason...to hype the FedEx Cup.

The media coddle their stars to garner access while the public believes it....and sets themselves up for disappointment. But it is not only media Tiger worship, it has been also blame the captain, blame his wife, blame uniform colors and belts, blame the weather, the slow greens, the scoreboards, rain suits, golf bags, golf straps, blame Johnny Miller. On and on. It has been funny to watch, actually. Americans have been desperate to find a way to deflect the obvious, the Europeans are good and equal to the task.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMulligan
Somebody wake Kelly Tilghman up and tell her Francesco is playing hide the sauseech with Tiger.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterOld Hornet
Agree that DVR is key to viewing, but at least once you should watch Budweiser commercial. Best beer commercial in a while.
Its still early, most matches close, USA still has a good chance.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterM
7:48 EST right now. U.S. still in it.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterJordan
Mulligan

I think you are confusing stating observations with 'blame'.

The USA is a train wreck as to the organization, but the 'blame' is poor putting by the USA and good putting by the Euros.

The USA knew the greens were gonna be slow. They have no excuse.

I still say the Euro get 6 to 8 pts.

John...nice post paste.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
Yeah, the Europe needs only to win 4 matches and halve two matches to win the Cup.

The USA team needs to win six matches and halve three matches. Possible but a long shot.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterScott
USA clothes look great today, even the goofy belt. Simple, clean .
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
Did Westwood really think the best putter in the world would 3-putt from 12-feet?

johnny, Mickelson shut it down after the US Open this year!

Mulligan, take a mulligan on that world ranking theory. Are you also a 911 truther?

What are the odds that Poulter makes a ball-striking tweet directed at Johnny Miller in the next 60 minutes?!
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
Hicks just uttered the most nauseating quote of the week: "Tiger's performance today is Heisman-like"
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterOld Hornet
Del

I think PM is not practicing due to health and family situation. I just don't think his health is as good as he led on at presser a few weeks back. Maybe the meds had an immidiate result, but then leveled out.... a very common situation.....

The World rankings are a joke until they redo the weighing of the current year more heavily.

The all-male galleries of unemployed pissheads are sure out in force today. Their vocal chords seem to be working, even if they're not.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterScott
Hicks is horrible, all Tiger all the time. The Americans have a chance if Mahan can turn his match around, the Euros are making almost every putt, but the biggest story is the day Tiger Woods is having.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commentercoldpga
@digsouth: I think you are confusing "distraction" with "stating observations".

The world rankings need to re-set every year. Otherwise , it is just more hype and hope then reality.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMulligan
OK, I bore down and watched about half an hour before work this morning (~6:30 to 7 ET). What the heck was USA doing? They kept showing shot after shot after shot after shot. Don't they know that you're only supposed to show 2 shots between each commercial break, with nauseating endless commentary and graphics in between?

Someone better wake them up at the USA network. Excellent coverage of play, and I mean actual play, coul just ruin CBS' model for crappy coverage.

Seriously, I was very impressed with the amount of shots that they covered this morning. If only we could get that every tournament, I think that you'd see an uptick in tv ratings. Is it a panacea? Likely not, but anything would be an improvement over the status quo. I especially liked the lack of hyper-Tiger focus. I only remember seeing a couple of his shots as they spread the coverage around pretty well.

Of course, it's possible that it's just Monday morning and I'm easily impressed. What say you, fellow Shack-ians?

Why haven't they stated the obvious that the Mahan match may decide the whole thing, Hicks is all but writing the US off by saying a comeback is "not likely". Since the comeback would consist of one match turning around it hardly seems out of reach.

Just finished the 6th Lexus hybrid commercial in off and on viewing this morning.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commentercoldpga
Pretty much comes down to Mahan running down McDowell.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterjjshaka
What a great statement by Johnny Miller about Furyk's approach shot on 18 - "a poor shot by his standards...." It allows Johnny to be very critical and say what he thinks ("a poor shot") and then he gets to take it back a little so it doesn't sound so harsh ("...by his standards"). I got an anonymous review exactly like this on an article I submitted to a journal recently (substitute "paper" for "shot")!
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRickABQ
USA has 3 matches 3 down, then have to get 1 point from those 3 matches.. so 1 win or two halves... not looking good
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterM
Mulligan....LOL...."distraction"..... very distracting if you think about it...;)

hey man, I'm pulling for a Monty win, for him.,,,other than that, I just want everyone to play their xxxxs off, and that seems to be the case....lot's of great shots again today.and let the chips fall where they may.

I am not a flag waver over Golf, the Olys, etc...I think it is about the competitor, not some political boundary

The OWGR was created as a marketing tool, and yes, we agree, it needs fixing to really get it to the system it can be.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
PTL

that was a great long stretch, but right b4 that, they were wearing out the 2 shots and out switch.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
digger, while your theories on Phil are plausible I ain't buying them. History would suggest that he's just lousy at team golf. But it's interesting to go back and look at overall records for US players with 20 or more Ryder Cup matches, the respective records are almost uniformly lousy. The two exceptions were Palmer and Nicklaus with winning percentages of 70% and 66%. Phil's running about 43%. But to Phil's credit he's playing well today and I'm glad he is!

Sure the World Rankings aren't perfect. But if they are skewed toward keeping the legacy #1 in place, then it also makes sense that getting to #1 is more difficult for every pursuer...and that includes Tiger. To suggest the OWGR are some sort of conspiracy foisted upon the unsuspecting is a bit far fetched, I think.

Speaking of which, Tiger 6-under in his last 5 holes and 8-under on the day (thru 13)!!!
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
The Mechanic just tightened the bolt a little tighter...
Mahan gets one back.. its really all up to him
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterM
Thanks digsouth! I am a cut/paste opportunist to say the least...great computer time saver function.

It's getting tighter as the holes go by. Team USA is hitting their putts with more authority....Tiger's on a roll....too little too late? McDowell clinches the final pt?
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterjohnnnycz
The Mechanic is the man.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
Del, I agree on PM ,,,bad team guy, and my observation is general, not just directed at his RC play.

On the OWGR, I believe that my comment about its creation is widely regarded as fact. I'll try the google to upport the info, ASAP. Maybe someone can jump in and link us up.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
Nice to see a younger guy like Overton have a great week. Hopefully this will propel him in his career. I've always found stories like his much more entertaining than if Eldrick or Phil win their next major.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commentercoldpga
don't know why it bothers me this late in the proceedings, but seeing Tiger's bouncer-- er, caddie--w/o the bib makes it look like SW thinks HE's playing.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterScoop4
@Old Hornet: I am so glad I had not yet turned on my TV to hear that one. Maybe a Reggie Bush Heisman? Oh, wait...
Tiger after his win to Maltbie: "I don't know what is going on in the other matches, I have to talk to the guys to see what's going on". Maltbie along the lines of you're just focusing on this match back to Tiger who is speaking of beating Molinari with seven birds and an eagle in 15 holes.

Tiger: "I've had a lot on my mind"

Johnny Miller - "That is probably the understatement of the year"

What a prick. Funny, but what a prick.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterNRH
Tiger pars in for 62 and the way he was going 59 was a real possibility....that's a marquee performance.
