Monty Finally Gets His Major Win, Brace Yourselves!

I can't wait to read the slobbering UK writers! By weeks end they'll be declaring him fit for the Prime Minister's seat someday soon! And the first suggestion of knighthood will earn some special golf writer a place in the hall of shame.

Oddly, all I can think of is the clutch play by the U.S. to get back into the match today, but hats off to the Europeans for a great win.

Thoughts?

Great US play today, but hardly surprising. They are great players back in their comfort zones (singles play) playing an American golf course. Still, despite the PGA and CBS's best efforts the RC remains the best entertainment in golf.

Azinger's right, the British weather cost us the cup. Pavin's inability to reset pairings to capitalize on U.S. strengths was decisive.

Fowler will be a great U.S. Ryder Cupper for many years. He gained some valuable experience and showed big time guts making birdie on the last 4 holes, including that clutch 20 footer at 18.

Leave it to you, Geoff, to take one final jab at Monty. Great entertainment and a great event - happy for Monty and the Euros.

The Americans put on a great effort today, especially when you consider Europe was up in 8 of the singles matches earlier this morning.

Despite the elements of farce with rainsuits, bags and Lift Clean and Place it proved to be a riveting and exciting finish, which can only be good for the game.

Congrats to Monty and his team - well done lads.

Geoff:
Monty wouldn't be a bad choice as PM - have you looked at some of the previous office holders?? :-) :-) :-)

I tuned in about 7:30 Eastern, so didn't see the earlier see saw.
The 3 hours I saw were unmatched rock 'em, sock 'em. Really riveting.
Fowler coming in and McDowell's putt on 16 were the highest of the highlights.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterdbh
Nice security on the 18th green. Yobs storming the place while Americans are still trying to leave. Brits classy to the very last.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterScott
Is the American solution to defeat really changing the venue for weather or changing the format? Really? Suck it up, yanks. Party on, Europe. O-lay, O-lay-O-lay-O-lay, O-lay! O-Lay.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMulligan
Can't ask for closer contest (despite weather delays). U.S. lost/Europe won by 1/2 point. btw, Anyone know if there there ever been a Ryder Cup that has finished that close (one half point)? Just wondering...
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterClean
I'm blaming the loss on Tiger's punk ass caddie. Refusing to wear the bib. Granted they were ugly and looked bulky, but show some team spirit and pride.

"Who, who refuses to wear the ribbon."
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterPapa Bing
Mulligan that's pretty amusing coming from a side that tried to invalidate the '99 Cup results based on a single overexuberant celebration.

i have never been a fan of monty's, but i'm happy for him and the european team. i suspect captaining a winning side may mean more to monty than the years he was a player. the euros flat outplayed us and deserved to win, and graeme mcdowell is one tough dude.

while i'm not sure that getting the logistics right would have changed the outcome, the rainsuit and golf bag issues for the yanks were just plain embarrassing. so much for "brand captainess," eh?
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
Nice win by the Euros. I have to say, I was kind of cheering for them, since I tend to like the Euro players better week in week out.

But, for a continent of rich sports songs and chants, they crowds need something better than "Eur-ope, Eur-ope". That's about as brain dead as the "U-S-A" ones.

I liked the U.S. look today, really. If they had black hats instead of red hats, then they could have done the man (men) in black thing.

GolfFan,
One final jab? Who said I was stopping after he wins the Ryder Cup? :)

Am I the only guy to witness Hunter Mahan gaggng on a simple chip? It looked like one of my efforts in a $5 Nassau

This is not meant to be harsh...I promise. - How may times will Phil & Tiger need to be carried in the team sessions? Would we have fared better without Tiger? 2008? Anyone notice the difference in Furyk's demeanor when Tiger's there versus not?....or most of the team for that matter? 2008 was the only time I've seen the guy jovial. I HONESTLY think the euros care-free attitude and our lack of one in this event (sometimes to mostly)...is THE difference. I'd love to hear anyones thoughts on any of this. Well played by mostly both sides & Congrats to the Euros!
i think garcia may have found himself a second career as the european team's hype-man. maybe flavor-flav will loan him one of those big clock necklaces?

Exciting golf, especially today. . . Those guys are really good. . .

The bad news is the boys in Ponte Vedra will be starting very soon on promoting next Fall's President's Cup. . . It is a long trip to Australia but, is there any doubt that the soon to be Hall of Fame member - and the honorary name sake of the event - G.H.W. Bush - will be there and dozing off in his golf cart while being driven by Commissioner Finchem?
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterWisconsin Reader
The session format change was a tough climb for the US to overcome. But they acquitted themselves well in the end. Cink gave away a costly half point, but he played great otherwise. Fowler was clutch. Furyk would have beaten anyone but Donald today. Mahan just had nothing today, which was too bad. Felt for him on that chip. Overton was a lift. Bubba was a letdown. Tiger was Tiger for awhile. Phil didn't do enough.

Too bad Monty didn't have to pay for leaving Casey and Rose off the squad. They wouldn't have had to sweat if they'd had that extra firepower.

Dont you just love Scott's posts!
How dare we privide British weather in Britain! What dastardly trickery was that!Makes me totally ashamed to be British.
Get it right up ya Scotty boy!
(p.s-this is not anti American-I like America and its people. It's just that I really, really hate Scott-and I've never even met him!)
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterchico
@scott and chico -

I am not sure Cap'n Pavin would have sat some of his struggling stars like TW or PM even if the weather had cooperated. Maybe DJ, but I would guess he would have stuck with Tiger and Phil throughout. It doesn't take a lot of neurons firing to write "Woods/Stricker" 4 times. Tiger played a little better than I expected (especially today), but still Stricker carried him. I do believe that both sides had to play in the weather equally, so it isn't even an issue anyway....
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRickABQ
Rick-quite agree.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterchico
Phil looked much more at ease in 2009 (PC) and 2008. Maybe he would have done better with Kim or O'hair.

I'm happy for Monty. He was a tremendous RC player, and I'm glad he added to his legacy. He is kind of a knob, but I have always felt that the hatred of him by American fans was out of line.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
Mike Colucci, someone said Hunter should still be proud -- I'm not so sure. Would have liked for Graham to have had to make that putt or face the prospects of 18 with a bomber like Hunter as his opponent. Oh well, we'll never know.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
Del, SkySports asked McDowell how it felt to sink the winning putt and he replied, 'I didn't have to, thank God'.
He also said the US Open had been like a Sunday round with his Dad compared to the pressure he felt coming in today.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commenterdbh
If I'm Hunter Mahan at retirement, I regret losing the US Amateur to ricky barnes more than the ryder cup to mcdowell. But what do I know, I couldnt win getting 4 a side last wknd...
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBK
Scott nailed it on the head,it was the British weather!
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBruce
Can someone with insights explain to me, why there is not more matchplay during the season? It was so exciting and fun to watch. The networks should love that format, things happen from the beginning. And play should also get faster.
I'm sorry, but I think that Monty is one of the few great personalities in the game. His interviews are always 'must see' events for me. I'm glad to see his team get this victory.

The Ryder Cup is quite the special event for guys like Garcia, Poulter and Monty. I wonder if old flag pants will ever manage to become more than just a Ryder Cup attack dog? If not, he'll still be memorable for these performances.

I know its your website etc etc ...... but do you really need to carry this anti-Monty thing on ?

Please for me !
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterJock
thers isnt much match play because the favorites often lose early. can you name the two finalists in the accenture match play held last march...see? not exactly riveting.

oh, and BK, answer is none of the above, bacause HM is marrying a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commentersmails
Jock,
I'll try, I really will. He was doing so well in the news conference until the end when he was gritting the teeth and getting all maudlin about how much the media helped in the cause!
10.4.2010 | Registered CommenterGeoff
I would take Monty over Gordon Brown and David Cameron every time, and I will miss him greatly now that this was likely his last hurrah at golf's center stage. One of the sharpest minds ever to set foot on a golf course, and I say that despite having been given the stare once as an on-course volunteer.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterHawkeye
Good for Monty, good for Europe, well played and well deserved.

That blown half-point by Kuchar and Cink yesterday really hurt ... the US should have put that one away.

That's the nature of this event though...woulda, coulda, shoulda for the loser and joy to the winners. Europe did what it needed to do, and the US played a lot better than was expected before the action and after yesterday. They just dug themselves a half-point too deep a hole on Sunday.

It should be exciting in Medinah, and once again we have the makings of a solid team as do the European side. My only hope is that Phil Mickelson is sat down for most of the the foursomes.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterCharles Boyer
dbh, good color there, very good. I did not see that interview with Graham. Interesting comment about the extreme amount of pressure.

You know Montry can still hit the golf ball. Will be interesting to see how his game goes now that he has the RC behind him.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDel the Funk
Its funny, but as I sit here reflecting on one of the most enjoyable Mondays that I can ever remember in my life (remember I had to go to the pub to watch it !) , it was the play of Ricky Fowler that totally blew me away .

God I hope that Kid lives up to the promise he shows .

"Nice security on the 18th green. Yobs storming the place while Americans are still trying to leave. Brits classy to the very last."

I'm with chico here. your anti-brit comments are uncalled for. although we continental europeans take the fun out of them once in a while, the atmosphere in wales was wonderful as I could sense on the tv. good banter on the first tee, respectful applause for good us shots and no sub-par heckling like in recent ryder cups being held in the states.

and to your above quote: were the poor guys attacked or something similar by the understandably very very happy european fans after an immense tension relief?

why not get yourself a lite beer and a supersize fast food meal and get over it?
10.4.2010 | Unregistered Commentereasy 3 putt
I think the turning point was when Monty ordered the guy running the jumbotrons to stop showing U.S. victories and made putts. Censorship kicks ass.
10.4.2010 | Unregistered CommenterScott
I was always a Monty fan.

Until he cheated.

@BK,

You definitely get it on which loss will definitely matter to Mahan in the long run.

@Scott,

Why even bother replying to the euro monkeys?

Definitely not worth it.

Scott - or maybe a clever use of home field advantage? Those grapes tasting pretty sour right now, hmmmm?? ;-)
