Traces Of Bailed-Out Auto Manufacturer Money To Go In Player, Network Pockets Over Next Four Years

Not only is GM's Cadillac sponsoring Doral, but they'll be the "umbrella" sponsor of all WGC events. I'm sure you all know what that means (no more Mercedes courtesy cars!), but just in case...

The World Golf Championships umbrella sponsorship provides Cadillac with a high-profile global marketing platform, including extensive branding and advertising across the four-event global series, as well as opportunities to connect with customers and dealers. Cadillac also will have vehicle display programs at events and throughout the year at Doral Resort, as well as initiate dealer and lead-generation programs.

“The World Golf Championships are all about the highest level of performance on a global stage and fit well with Cadillac's theme as the New Standard of the World,” said Don Butler, Vice President for Cadillac Marketing. “As a global series, it provides us with an ideal marketing partnership for Cadillac to efficiently and effectively reach our target audience. We could not think of a more fitting way to bring golf back to Cadillac."

No honorary chairmanship for Barack Obama for saving the auto manufacturer so GM could replenish player and television coffers?

The good ol' US-of-A is still far and away the largest GM shareholder -- so how do you square this with the outrage the politicians directed toward Northern Trust and the LA Open? This could get interesting!!

I wonder if this means the really good car companies, (you know the cars that people actually want), are moving to the Euro, or World tour?

Can you say sponsor's exemption for Barack?

Global series? currently WGC's are only in 2 countries: US and China.

A chairmanship for Barack? A sponsor's exemption? Are you kidding me . . . they're probably already getting his plaque ready in St. Johns County -- surely this warrants enshrinement in the WG HoF.

I sense a World Golf Hall of Fame induction for Barack Obama.

Note to Russ on global deal:

As the great Bob Verdi once noted in a snarky Doral game story aside in Golfworld, Miami counts a non-English speaking country, too.

they are global because the FIELD is global. We let people come from dozens of countries to play in the WGCs.

I see this as good news - A luxury car built by an American company - involved in professional golf's luxury events. . . I know Republicans have said they want the USA to fail for the next 2 years so they will figure out a way to spin this politically negative for Obama . . . Actually, reading some of the earlier posts - I guess they have already done it. . .

Correction WR, we only want Barry's socialist policies to fail as confirmed Nov. 2nd. Saving a company and jobs is a bit different than allowing the entity that helped kill it to come in as a partner. Great deal, not so good if you were a bond holder or tax payer. The UAW is already selling off their share of the gift, they only need the price to hit $36 to break even (closed at $32). You and I as Mr & Mrs Tax Payer are projected to break even if it hits $50 (some analysts say $75 is a more realistic number). This of course assumes we'll have something that we're allowed to sell.

So, Old Hornet: Was it socialism when Bush the Lesser and his Sancho Panza, Hank Paulson (late of Goldman Sachs), bailed out the TBTF banks in the autumn of 2008 with their TARP? To the tune of somewhere north of $700 billion, a number we will never really know but can probably be reckoned in the trillions? Just askin'. And really, calling any action by a US President "socialist" is beneath you. Besides, from what I read of the eructations from that august firm of Hannity Limbaugh Boehner Beck & Palin, the President is really a MuslimKenyansocialistfacistcommunistliberalgolferbasketballplayer who wants The Other to win. Not right-thinking Americans. Or is that Right-thinking Americans?
I'm gonna go to townhall.com or the puffington host so I can maybe read some enlightened comments about GOLF.

My old and respected friend KLG. The Shackelford Stream was so clear, I executed a double-hawl cast with a size 4 Obama uniter fly for a sweet drift and just as expected, you were the first trout to rise. However, on this site it's catch and release only. You'll have another chance to examine the offering in more depth come election time. You might discover that it's actually a divider fly.

Until then you're free to preach the gospel according to ruling class "elites" and pop culture denizens - Everyone must be forced to accept the new orthodoxy. Everyone must submit to the left's Rousseauian will.

BTW - How's your game ? Maybe I should check in on you when I stop at Reynolds on my way south.

when we end the greatest welfare in the country, the corporate, military industrial, the utility freebies, the bank allowances at gambling, the oil company military costs, then you can talk about the piss ant 'socialism' that is all bullshit.

Any clue what the actual price of a gallon of gas is, not to mention the human coss? ther'es your socialism.

We have been under a demented no party system in DC for over 30 years.

wake up. Bickering about O, or W ....shoot man, they are the same, as to their intent.

Hate to break it to you American taxpayers, but the GM situtation is a lot worse than you think. There is still about $40 billion of taxpayer money trapped in the company and the price of GM would have to at least double from this point to have a chance at recouping it. The first IPO was the 2nd largest in US history and was as much as all the money raised through IPOs in the US since the beginning of the year. Getting that remaining money out is a pipedream.
Secondly, the federal government allowed GM to carry foward its losses, which is unprecedented in bankruptcy. When an entitiy files for bankruptcy, it is release from all its legal obligations, but also loses the ability to write off future earnings against the losses it incurred during its former legal life.
The kicker is that the value of the future write offs from former losses for GM is a staggering $48 billion!!! That is $48 billion that would have been collected in tax reciepts in a normal bankrupcty case.
So, the taxpayer is currently out almost $90 billion, even though Geithner and Obama were chiming about the possibility of getting all the money back and a bit more. Give me a break.
GM is a gift to the unions.

Y'all got Digger so irritated he can't even type straight. Meanwhile, over on townhall.com, they're having a helluva discussion about Poulter, lucky coins and whether golf should call a Constitutional Convention to address outdated rules interpretations.

Nice one Marky Mark! About what that's becoming...burp twice, say the word golf...and you're in.

Excellent points there Vincent Chase. And to think GM and their $48BN tax windfall are pouring money into backing a tax-free organization with a CEO that has is making close to $10,000,000 in annual compensation (not to mention 6 or 7 underlings all making 7-figures++). I cannot believe the politicians haven't jumped all over this one.

Ky, what was the alternative to TARP in your opinion? Not hassling you, just curious.

Don't blame me for starting all these political rantings - just because I was happy for GOLF that an American car company was now involved with some of the best tournaments - with the best fields - in the world. . . Yes, I said the GOP types here would find a way to spin this against Obama - which they are doing with a vengeance. . . Sorry guys - if I had just said I wished it had been another foreign car manufacturer instead of Cadillac - these guys would have been happy and we would be reading and writing about GOLF.

Cars have to advertise. This is a good thing.

What is the thought on the US ARMY sponsoring a top fule dragster and Nascar car?

They ave been doing drag racing do 20 years, and it recruits.

Yes it is tax dollars.

The car bailout is a drop in the bucket. We are spending 1,5-3 billion a week on wars that will mean nothing the day we leave, except to the families of the dead and wounded, and the deformed children of soldiers with du poinsoning and heavy metal poisoning, which is about every soldier whom has been to Iraq or Afganistan.

I am NOT for corporate welfare, but we MUST have manufacturing capability,or we will be ordering take out tanks from out enemies if ever a real war would occur.

Let's make the Pros sports owners pay for all the stadiums , and ramp up getting our tax dollars back starting there. High visibility, and a sign of strenth from the govt. I'm holding my breath.
