Open Championship Second Round Open Thread

The rain has finally stopped so the late-early draw might get a chance to score. The forecast calls for a mostly dry afternoon with the same SW wind as yesterday of 20-25 mph with gusts to 35.

Can the espn hacks find any more pronunciations for Oosthuizen? geeze.

I don't know which is worse _ the commentators on ESPN or the direction. And Ricky Barnes was just asked how long it took him to dress in the morning. Let's see more golf.

m: my thought exactly. i thought yesterday's "oost-hoozen" pronunciation was wrong (or at least different from the way renton laidlaw says it), so i went to google and found the correct pronunciation in about 10 seconds. does espn not have any production help with internet access or something?

good lord. somebody get rickie fowler a mirror, stat!
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterthusgone
ESPN just showed a graphic that featured Johnny Miller as one of the youngest guys to shoot 63 in a major. Who knew?
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterWillie
Willie, I just found out yesterday. You'd think Johnny would talk about it sometime.
Latest rumor: He did it at Oakmont. During our Open, no less.

Just wait until Monty finds that idiot with the bagpipes
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterWillie
Yeah, but what I heard was the course was soft because of a rain, so it really doesn't count according to the ghost of Henry Fownes.
Thanks for the mention, Geoff. Although the page is called 'Irish Golf News' and heavily dominated by Rory McIlroy at the moment, I can assure you that I link to a broad range of stories from around the golfing world..... http://www.facebook.com/irishgolfnews

Too Windy?

What a bunch of press Agents!
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenteradam Clayman
A British Open stopped due to the winds?

Well I never...
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMatt
R&A say they're not taking players off the golf course at the moment as they're hoping it's going to be a temporary suspension.

Woods, Rose and Villegas have all walked back from the 1st green, but others are staying where they are and Ian Poulter is making a few phonecalls....
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterStan Ferguson
Don't the Scots say "Nae wind, nae golf"? I guess it's now "Wind, nae golf" too.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim Gavrich
It took Jason Dufner 30 minutes to two putt from 10 feet on number 7 because of the wind. They had to stop it or the players would be standing around for hours waiting between holes. The backup this has caused must be unbelieveable.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBob
No live feed or TV here. Tell me, please, how windy is it? I consider it scandalous to stop play at the Open for anything less than a gale. Club up and knock it down!
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterpasaplayer
The wind is much stronger in the more exposed parts of the course. The 7th green became unplayable with the wind. Gusts close to 50 mph.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRick
pasaplayer,

The problem seems to be a ball that moved on the 7th green.

Otherwise, it doesn't look all that windy to me.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
It doesn't look crazy windy, but obviously it is up.

Do the late starters get another benign morning draw tomorrow?
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
Gusts in the 30s, steady breeze in the 20s.

Get on with it.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
I think the rules official they had on air hinted that some of the players on or near number 7 refused to play.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRick
Understand, if someone other than Eldrick was about to tee off in the wind there would be no stoppage.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRon
Thank you all.

Tighthead's point is well taken and should be a concern.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterpasaplayer
Instead of measuring the wind, why don't they just plop a few balls on a few greens and see if they are still moving. Seems like that would be the best way to test it to see if play can resume.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRick
I was watching channel 705 on Directv and some idiot a little while ago said that the problem was not just balls moving on the green, but also how balls in the air could be effected.

Enough of channel 705 for me.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
According to the ESPN broadcast, the gusts are down a little and play will resume shortly (10 minutes).
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRick
Resuming play shortly.

The right move.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
I still think it's a lock that Oosthuizen will have a 5 shot lead at the end of the day. No chance anyone in the afternoon comes home in better than 7 under. No chance.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRick
There are leads and then there are real leads.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
Peter Alliss was there for Johnny Miller's 63!
The guys at +2 will probably make the cut.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBob
A real dilemma on DirectV channel 702.

A pleasure to listen to Allis, Judy, and Weiskopf, but having to put up with Van Pelt is grating.

He is talking more than the rest combined.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
What in the hell do you have to do in order to be assessed a penalty stroke in a tournament ?

The R&A and the PGA have no guts - 30 freaking minutes to 2 putt !

rob
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commentermainuh
Looks like the complaints about scores being too low was premature. The guys already in the clubhouse are very fortunate.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBob
This is real golf, imo.

A great day.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
Put Monty in Simon Cowell's seat next year
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterWillie
Just back from the course. It was very windy but quite a surprise that the ball was actually moving on the greens when they are this slow.
Dont blame the PGA for any of the decisions this week though Mianuh-this is 100% Rand A this week.
My info is that players refused to play on 7,8 and 11 and having experienced that myself its not an easy situation to deal with.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commenterchico
I cannot wait to go to St. Andrews and hit a window on 17.
07.16.2010 | Unregistered Commentervwgolfer
ESPN just said it best.

"Not only does the amateur have best round going, hes also tied for third".

Yet, they wont show ONE shot of him. So unfreakingly biased its not funny anymore
07.16.2010 | Unregistered CommenterM
Can Darren clarke putt or what!
