Are they playing golf yet? ESPN seems to be showing a Phil Mickelson practice round in between bouts of acting like idiots about such topics as wind, weather, geography, history and sports broadcasting.

I hope someone, somewhere is able to enjoy the 'greatest show' on the golf course. Over in North America, we're watching intern made fluff pieces and interviews with ESPN personalities occasionally interrupted by Rinaldi brain farts, er, interviews.

I've had 4 hours so far of coverage (2 pm UK time). I think that everyone here does interviews offers good value, or we can watch 9-11, or BBC main coverage.

Rory looks disinterested again today; another par or worse round on its way.

18th just driven to 8 feet by Schwartzel - how many eagles there today? 2?
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Lipped out by Schwartzel; no eagle on 18th yet.

Tiger's spot on the practice area - far left, least wind.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Phil makes a birdie at 6 - woohoo (-1).

I gave up on watching for now. Espn needs stars and leaders on course before they'll pay attention. I'll tune in when tiger's out there.

Curtis Strange is an idiot.

directv has something they call the "international" channel, which i think shows the bbc feed. just golf shots and voiceover commentary, no espn folderol. i found this, to my great relief, after 40 minutes or so of espn blather during which they showed maybe 4 golf shots in the tournament they allegedly are "covering."

The early ESPN coverage doesn't engage me.

I am internet shopping with the TV on in the background. I would turn in my mancard but I was never issued one.

I think I got up too early - 5:00 am Pacific.

Picked up some dryjoys. Thinking about a summer suit.

Strange is an idiot, but I find him oddly likable. Tirico and Van Pelt annoy me.

Thank god Oosthuizen didn't spoiler the test match for me.

@thusgone,

I thinking you are talking about Directv # 705.

I'm watching it now and agree it is much better than the ESPN blather.

Yesterday, there was a younger guy who talked too much on 705, but these guys right now are fine.

I'm just painting my house again. I know high ceilings were necessary pre-AC in this climate, but I'm getting tired of this ladder. Guys, life is entirely too short to watch golf "coverage" on ABC/ESPN. Don't forget. ABC is the originator of "Up Close and Personal." Bah. Even Roone made a mistake once in a while. I'm jealous of Tim. If I could watch BBC I wouldn't have to paint. DirecTV? Might have to look into that. Where did you get the DryJoys, Tighthead? My 3-year-old pair finally started to leak (Wally does something right!) and I need to replace them. Oddly likable? Pretty good description. Andy North annoys me, for real. Van Pelt should stick to NXT commercials. But, you know what would really be fun? Listening to Boomer from St. Andrews. No, really. Imagine the possibilities...
Maybe from there Boomer could go interview the Queen.

KLG - ebay. White with brown saddle. Not going with seersucker - a design not made for old prop forwards, and daughter #1 says vertical stripes highlight the bend in my nose.

I'll take Curtis over Azinger. I think NBC has done well with the additions of Faxon and Jacobson. Did Trevino ever have a stint in the booth?

Nice gesture by Eldrick yesterday in waving Watson's group up on 18 so he could finish in the twilight Friday. I'm no Tiger fan, but Watson has almost seemed to relish the man's downfall. Maybe now Watson can offer him a handshake and some private words.

Do you think the guys who are bunched are expecting Ooosthuizen to just fall apart - kind of an outlier of sorts?

I wonder if Calc is wishing that his caddie was not Mrs. Calc.

Just listened to Oosterhazen interview, the guy is chilled out; not expecting a major foldo. But if the wind just ups it a little, he won't be getting too far away. Average for guys who are on is already -4 through 9, so someone could go 65 or 64 and put some pressure on a -10 or so. Let's just hope the guy's not so chilled that he go out and shoots really, low, or this could be the most boring Sunday for a while.

Wind is up, says Sam Torrence (4:10 pm).

Tiger in the gorse - penalty drop
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Not less than 27 people on the course around Tiger's gorse situation - is that too many?
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Not wishing him any bad, but I would be VERY surprised if Louis runs off with this.

Allis and Wayne Grady now on DirecTV 705.....great!
07.17.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
Some of the Aussies make great announcers.

Jack Newton has always been a pleasure to listen to and Wayne Grady is the same.

Dish TV guy here...is that DirectTV channel 705 an HD channel?
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterKevin
Brand new Direct TV customer. Dish Network has better navigation tools but you can't beat Direct TV programming. I discovered the "international" golf telecast and am finally enjoying watching golf again.

Does ESPN think we enjoy their endless blather and constant (Tiger) recaps? We tune in to watch golf! I really tried to stick with ESPN this am while Watson was on, but still the intl channel was superior.

Can't wait to watch grand slam tennis!
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterLadyH
Kevin, yes, it's HD.

Tighthead: Not going with the seersucker is probably a good choice. A beige/tan Haspel is always a good choice for summer. ;-) Here is Georgia shorts, t-shirt, sandals, and a very cold beer are the order of the day. Global warming is real.

Trevino was in the NBC booth in the late 80's just before he aged into the Grumpy Old Mens' Tour. He was good, too. IIRC.

That was indeed a classy thing for Eldrick to do!

They are sure hoping the young man will fall apart. If he keeps it ~70 these next two days he won't be caught. Has anyone figured out to pronounce his name? I'm not sure how to, but I'm not required to say it on the teevee.
So amazing to contrast the BBC/ESPN feeds. ESPN will spend 10 minutes showing figjam, while BBC will show 10 minutes of players on the leaderboard. Like Barnes, Garcia, Kaymer, Stenson, Garcia, Watney, Mcilroy
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterM
Thanks KLG. Poplin has been ordered. No need to further shame Mrs. Tighthead.

Looks like a fun day shaping up. I'd like to see the wind pick up and bunch the field for a Nascar style Sunday - lots of position swapping, trading paint and a few ugly pile-ups.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
For those with DirecTV, you can hit the red button on your remote and be able to see the leaderboard, check on individual player's scorecards, etc.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
DTV #705 is for both. Nothing better then Peter Aliss. He is my Golf, Vin Scully.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTommy Naccarato
JVDB nows joins Allis and Grady!

Beats the hell out of Tirico, Strange and Pod Guy.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
JVDV, excuse me.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered Commenterd.b.cooper
Glad you guys are all dialed in now.
Oh no; van de velde following final group.
Not my favourite.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
How Swede it is; Stenson on a charge - could get to -9 by 18.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Tiger misses the par 3 8th by 50 yards; what's with that?
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
What a bounce for Casey on 2; skill or luck?
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
If Casey and Westwood could putt, we would have a good game today, but when the pressure starts, wooden.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Calc is kicking this around pretty bad already. Let' hope he lead Oosty astray with him.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Alliss to ESPN lifts the whole thing out of doldrums, can't wait for him to come on. Good comparison to Scully, he's around the same age (80) and unique, can just work alone and be entertaining. And amazingly, has not lost a step in his commanding delivery.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMedia driven
Ken Brown talking about Mickelson magic - at -1, let's just say he's not been spreading it around too much this week.
07.17.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim in Hoylake
Just want to echo what everyone said on ESPN- absolutely awful when it came to showing anyone the first 2+ hours. The typical catering to the attention impaired casual viewer.
Thank God for the internet and streaming sites.
Oost and Calc are gonna blow sky high I think
