New Member Tiger Breaks Shark's Course Record

Something else for Tiger and Greg Norman to talk about when they have their "guy-to-guy" sitdown. Tim Rosaforte reports:

There were times when Tiger Woods would shoot 62 and it wouldn't be news, but on a slow weekend his course-record at Medalist GC stirs anticipation of a return to competition at this week's Frys.com Open. Woods made 10 birdies -- including seven in a back-nine 29 -- to better the 64 shot by a group of 10, including course co-designer Greg Norman, Steve Marino and Jesper Parnevik.

tell me there isn't at least a little "F--- you" in Tiger turning in this score.

why should tiger care about a score shot in a casual round. He would never turn it in--- except he beats Mr. 2 majors.

I'll bet Tiger agrees to loan his 14 major trophies to the Medalist clubhouse--on condition they display all the designer's major trophies next to his.

Hey, if I wasn't even in the Top 50 in the world anymore, I'd be leaking info about a 62 as well. "I'm still here. Soft of."

Tiger ascribes to the Dave hill theory of life--- "amateur golf aint shit"--i.e. if u dont shoot it with the flag up, it doesnt matter.

He puts a scorecard in his hand in a couple of days, I will reserve judgement on how he is playing until then
....and so does he, except greg "iam a genius businessman" has to take his name off the men's grill wall, and repalce it with "E. Tiger Woods"

Those two deserve each other.
Agree with S&T wholeheartedly.

Let's see what he can do in front of a crowd when he HAS to use a pencil/scorecard/new caddy/press conferences/and all the other stuff one goes thru at a Tour event.

I'm hoping he breaks with tradition and simply calls his new caddy "Joe" versus the child names he assigns to other people he lets into his circle of...err...friends.

It will be interesting...I'm going to be refreshing ShotLink all weekend to see how he does vs the Goyim.

Full disclosure: I am a huge Toger homer.

No one can deny that the ONLY interesting thing is golf is the state of Tiger's game. This week will be enormously interesting to golf fans and non-fans alike because of Tiger at the Frys. SportsCenter will be all over the Frys because of Tiger.

The Presidents Cup will be interesting ONLY because of Tiger.

I know: some of you will wax on about the golf course at the P Cup. No sale. RM is a great course be we all KNOW that TV is not in any way capable of showing off a golf course. I DVRd the Dunhill so I could get a great look at the holes on TOC that I played this summer. I especially wanted to see #11. It was useless. TV cannot capture anything intersting about a golf course.

"Cavvie?"

To be fair, he did call him Joe at the PC press conference. But we'll see how long he holds out. He's an addictive personality, and this reductive nicknaming is one of his itches.

We heard about many "great" rounds shot at Islesworth, (or whatever that place is called) only to have him come out and hack it around in competition. We'll see what happens this week when he tees it up.

He's going to be "Joey" for sure ... everyone in TW's life gets an "ee" .. Steiny, Stevie, then there was the ex, who was just "E" ...

I doubt TW leaked this, more like Rosie got it from someone at Medalist after TW turned in the scorecard.

No denying the timing, though, a couple of days after he hears the Shark say he'll never win another major.

What a sad little kid Tiger is. Fabrications for attention. (Oh yes, I DO hate Tiger with all my heart. And your, and your and yours, too.

How convenient that he shot 62 this weekend. Press for Tigee

As we usually say to our playing partners "What did you shoot on the last 4 holes?"

Luke Donald tied the course record at St. Andrews on Saturday.

So, tying the course record on a 500 yr old course and he still didn't win the tournament - whoopdee effing do.

Now Urkel is leaking out that he shot the course record on some swampland layout, in beinign conditions, with no tv cameras, with no one chanting "Rachel Uchitel" on his backswing, and "Jamie Jungers" on his follow through, with no pressers afterwards, and no Peter Kostis to meet him walking off 18 - AND, he wants this fart of an acheivement to be some sort of warning shot to other tour players?

I guess this is what happens with he can't get Cook, O'Meara, Begay III, or Howell III to spout off to the press that he has never hit it better, that he is totally puring it, that he is soooooooo close, and that he has never ever ever ever been happier.
10.3.2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarky Mark
Why didn't Tim Rosefort report it when Jesper Pornoflick tied the Medalist course record? It could have been the first step in Jesper's comback.
10.3.2011 | Unregistered CommenterRob
Rosaforte adds:

"Known for its difficulty, Medalist plays 7,157 yards from the tips with a course rating of 74.5 and a slope of 142."

Corde Valle plays a couple of yards longer, has a higher course rating, and a higher slope. And, it is highly unlikely that the pins are going to be set up for "member play."
10.3.2011 | Unregistered CommenterHole-in-three
course rating of 74.5 and a slope of 142

So if you are a tour pro and at the very least +7, then Par is what, 66.6 for a friendly game?

4-5 under, big whoop.

What will be the "out of choice" when there is an M/C at

... drumroll...

The Fry's? (Is IT now the "Fifth or Sixth Major"?)

-rim shot-

"No one can deny that the ONLY interesting thing is golf is the state of Tiger's game."

So, does golf come to an end when he finally fades from the scene, be it sooner or later?

That statement is nonsensical.
10.3.2011 | Unregistered CommenterJack Frost
I'm not sure how Tiger could have shot the course record because he was in NYC either leading the protesters or the CEOs (whichever fits your particular devil); or he was in Asia causing the latest typhoon or interfering with relief efforts while meeting with Al-Quaeda playboy bunnies; or he was in a secret lab being injected with another super steroid; or he was ...

You folks are sad.

@Tiger's Fault

Don't you listen? Urkel says everything is the media's fault.
10.3.2011 | Unregistered CommenterGorsegolf
Let's face it: this should be a non-story, except for two things: (1) it's Tiger, and everything with Tiger is magnified, and (2) it has a tie-in to the story about Greg Norman wanting to talk to Tiger "guy to guy." (Yeah, right). Even then, it should be a non-story.

As various posters have stated in their respective colorful ways, there is a world of difference between posting a score in practice, and having to score when the spotlights and the pressure are on.

I thought that was Sarah Palin! Are.... are ... are you suggesting that Palin and Tiger are the same person?! But you're right, I have never seen them together. Like Clark Kent and Superman!
10.3.2011 | Unregistered CommenterTiger's Fault
@Tiger's Fault

Tiger was actually dating Palin.

One of his many ex's is Joslyn James, who starred in the hit adult film feature "Nalin' Palin"

Maybe this is all the porn industry's fault.

Just checking in here...entertaining as always. My favorite is the conspiracy theorists about "leaking" the 62 in the practice round. Stupid.
10.3.2011 | Unregistered CommenterDanny Boy
@Danny boy

Theory? Unless Tim Rosaforte was tagging along to witness the round, it was deliberately communicated to him. That sounds more like fact than theory. Rosaforte is a known journalist - passing information to him has one sole purpose, to have the info published.

Me thinks you are a tad naive. Maybe that is why they call you Danny Boy.

Looking ahead to Sunday evening....

"Obviously you're not happy with your score today, but can you tell us how close you are to being where you want to be with your golf swing"

TW: "Well, as I've said all along - it's a process. I'm hitting the ball much straighter now and it's going to take some time to get accustomed to the new target lines, but I really love my traj... it's the best traj I've ever had.

"Explain to all of the listeners out there what "traj" is.

TW: "Trajectory, of course. The flight of my golf ball."

Excellent. There seems to be a little rust with the wedges, but is that something that will also work itself out with a little time?"

TW: "Absolutely. I just need more reps, is all."

Very good. Can you once again explain what "reps" is?

TW: "Reps... You know, repetitions, more golf swings."

Very good. Now, obviously you're going back and forth between the Scotty and the Nike Method putter, but do you feel like you're putting better than the 34 putts showed today?"

TW: "Absolutely. There's a major difference between Bent and Bermuda, and the grain takes some getting used to. It's all a matter of just finding the proper lines again and stroking the pill with the proper pace."

"Again, part of the process that you eluded to. And would you tell our listeners out there what 'stroking the pill' is in golf speak?"

TW: "You know - the putting stroke impacting the ball. Man, you guys have missed me haven't you..." (laughs)

"If you would just go through a few shots with me.... the wedge approach on 15 that missed right?"

TW: "Yeah, had 147 and unfortunately got a mudder there."

"A mudder? Care to explain again?"

TW: "Yeah, huge clump of mud on the right side of the ball. The ball darted right as soon as it left the face of the club."

"But that's odd... we've not had rain here for almost 2 months."

TW: "Yeah, crazy ain't it?" (smiling)

"The tee shot on the 3rd that ended up in the fairway on number 12?"

TW: "Yeah, that was what I was talking about with making the adjustment in picking out new lines with me hitting a straighter ball."

"But the 12th fairway is actually 2 fairways over from hole 3."

TW: "Yeah, crazy ain't it?" (laughs)

"Finally, the 1 footer you missed there at the end on the 18th green?"

TW: "Well, that was two things actually. Remember that we're playing on Bent and not Bermuda, so there's not as much grain influencing those putts... and then there was a huge spike mark between the ball and the hole. It was a good putt, just didn't go in."

"Ah, I see... and one last question - as of Monday you dropped out of the top 50 in the World Golf Rankings. Does that kinda bother you that your ranking has fallen so quickly, and does that provide more incentive to start winning again?"

TW: "It is what it is. It's hard to get out and practice and play a lot of golf with a knee injury, and that too is part of the overall process - to get healthy again so I can get out and compete well enough to win. Better traj and better strokes on the pill come with more reps, and a few less mudders... but it is what it is for now."

"But you think you can get back to #1 someday?"

TW: "Absolutely. If I didn't I wouldn't be playing.... I expect to win every tournament I play in."

"But doesn't it bother you that you didn't break the top 30 in the Fry's this weekend?"

TW: "No, because it's part of the process."

"Thanks, Tiger. When might we see you playing again?"

TW: "Well, it's off to my new club to get in some practice rounds, I actually shot 62 there last week, 29 on the back nine. I love that place, wish we could get it on the schedule.... but I'll spend the next couple of months there with Joey and Sean, prepping for the Cup in November. Then it's off to Melbourne."

"Before we go... do you think you deserve to be on the team over Keegan Bradley?"

TW: "Absolutely."

"Thanks Tiger."

TW: "You bet."
