State Of The Game Podcast 41: Bill Fields

Golf World's Bill Fields has published a collection of his favorite work titled Arnie, Seve, and a Fleck of Golf History. As with my favorite golf anthologies, Fields has put together a diverse menu of players and interesting times in the game to read about. He follows each piece up with a reflection or two, something not often done in some of the older golf anthologies. The result is a valuable addition to any golf library, but also an excellent gift for someone of substance in learning about some of the characters who've played the game.

Bill joined us to talk about his work, the U.S. Open(s) at Pinehurst and other issues in the game. As always you can listen below, on the State of the Game page, via MP3 download, via iTunes or via iTunes subscription.

Finished the book in two evenings last week, which was way too fast! Outstanding work, and thanks to the University of Nebraska Press (!) for recognizing its value.

His book is bound to appeal to anyone who frequents this site.

Great collection of pieces touching on many of the game's most unique players and settings. A worthy addition to any golf-lover's library.

No hyperbole or flashy/snarky writing. Every piece features accurate reporting told with a real feel for the game and the people who play it at the highest levels.

The collection spans a hundred years of golf history brought to life in insightful and sympathetic prose.

Big fan of Bill Fields who obviously loves the game. Looking forward to reading this book.

The irony of golf talk regarding "growing the game" is hilarious in that the idea is oblivious to what golf is . Golf is an exclusive sport. Members at golf clubs exclude non-members who don't qualify for membership. Single-digit handicap players exclude high handicap players. Every golfer excludes any other golfer who plays worse.

Geoff, listened to this and a number of the recent podcasts on the long holiday weekend drive. Overall, entertaining stuff, but you may want to consider changing the name of the show to Grumpy Old Golfers. After hearing lamentation after lamentation about the modern game, I was left wondering why any of you guys still bother to play at all. It's still a pretty great game, if you ask me!

Louis,
Yes, we think the state of the game has issues. Easy fix, don't listen!
