Golf Channel Adds David Duval As Studio Analyst

GolfChannel.com's Ryan Lavner reports on the hiring of the former World No. 1.

The full press release here:

FORMER WORLD NO. 1 DAVID DUVAL JOINS GOLF CHANNEL AS ANALYST IN STUDIO AND ON SITE AT GOLF’S MARQUEE EVENTS

ORLANDO, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2015) – Professional golfer and former World No. 1 David Duval has joined Golf Channel’s broadcast team and will serve as a studio analyst and on site at selected PGA TOUR events, at major championships and other marquee events. Over the past three years, Duval has worked as a guest analyst for both Golf Channel and other sports networks, while continuing to pursue competitive golf.

“We’re extremely excited to welcome David to our Golf Channel family and our talented team of golf analysts,” said Golf Channel Executive Producer Molly Solomon. “David not only brings an enormous amount of credibility as one of the best golfers of his generation, but a knowledgeable and candid voice that our viewers will enjoy and can depend on.”

Duval joined the PGA TOUR in 1995 and posted seven second-place finishes in his first two seasons. Between 1997 and 2001, his achievements rocketed him to a World No. 1 ranking and forged a competitive rivalry with another dominant golfer of the time – Tiger Woods. During that span, Duval was consistently among the top-10 on the PGA TOUR money list- leading the list in 1998 – won the Vardon Trophy and Byron Nelson Award, posted a 4-0 record at the 1998 Presidents Cup in only his second season on the PGA TOUR, won 13 times on the PGA TOUR, twice tied for second at the Masters (1998 and 2001), played on the victorious 1999 Ryder Cup team, and won the 2001 Open Championship.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Duval, 43, currently resides in Colorado with his wife, Susie, and five children.

Excellent pickup for Golf Channel .

Always liked this guy, he always seemed grumpy and pissed off when in fact he was pretty shy. We forget that in his prime, he was as good as any of them,

Agree...great addition. DD possesses a very sharp wit...will be interesting for sure.

So...is he hanging up the clubs for good?

Literate and hardworking guy. Like the founder of the network his father was a club professional.

Buzz, buzz!

Too bad Fox didn't pick up David.

Oh wait, great thing Golf Channel picked him up - I get to listen to him more often there!

I like him too but feel he is holding back sometimes on what he really thinks.

He'll play a limited schedule this coming season.

Why does GC keep one of its most outspoken guys, John Hawkins, off the air??

Media Driven,

I totally agree. Hopefully this frees him up

I felt the times he's been on already, he was more open and candid that most, still holding back - probably yes, but I imagine they all have to hold back some just to keep their jobs. Good grab by the golf channel.

A promising hire but so many of these former players keep disappointing. They just don't have strong opinions. I don't care if they are polished, I just want strong points of view. Perhaps having a contract will free him up to develop into the next Johnny. We need our Barkley in golf.

How many world #1's does this make in the studio or booth... Duval, Faldo, Norman, Strange?

People keep making excuses for Duval. Why would anybody think he'd make a good analyst? People around here like to criticize Andy North, but at least he seems personable. Golf Channel keeps going with guys whose games have disappeared, yet they have no personality. DiMarco comes to mind. I see Duval falling just a notch below Lanny Wadkins.

It will be nice to have a former player on TGC who actually won a major and played at the highest level. No offense to Brandel, Nobilo, Flesch, etc., but they weren't exactly #1 in the world.

Good golly Miss Molly aren't you the same talent evaluator who said how much she always liked hearing Lanny Wadkins??

DD is an acquired taste. I remember when he shot a 59 in the final round of the Hope, he was asked what he intended to now, he said "go to the range got a few things to work on". Absolutely dead pan not a glimmer of a smile for a couple of seconds. It was beautiful

@ Press Agent - "We" didn't forget this. only you.

I refer you to Ms Lip Out's post.

On another subject, one of the reasons Chamblee is noted is because he has opinions - right or wrong, he goes there with them. It would be good to see others follow suit and not just indulge in the usual back-rubbing.

GC hires Duval...so who's getting the axe?
01.8.2015 | Unregistered CommenterBobbydback
I never said I liked Lanny. He was awful, just not as bad as Curtis Strange.
