Cypress Point Hosting...A College Golf Tournament Again

Golfweek's Brentley Romine explains the format and how it came to be that Stanford is hosting a college golf tournament at the ultra-exclusive Cypress Point.

Considering that most of elite clubs do not open their doors to tournaments and some actually sell memberships to universities, it's great to see Cypress Point opening its doors to college golf for the second time. Coupled with the higher-profile East Lake Cup, it's a nice week for college golf.

Social media posts from the teams has been pretty much non-existent, but this recent image shows the bunkers looking as great as they did in MacKenzie's day, with nice fringy fescue edges.

I had the pleasure of playing of playing there in 2002.They were using your book for reference on #6. It was surreal.

Wish I was in college. Boy would I love to play that course! Geoff, just got your book on it, can't wait to read it!

Had the good fortune to take my Dad there for his 60th birthday 13 years ago. The round is still clear as day in my mind. That stretch of 13-17 is mythical.

Its nice to see read and hear that once again the haves are hosting the college haves. Me thinks inviting one or two have nots wouldn't be so hard, would it?. Could you imagine how Cypress would look in the PR dept!!!

I am sure last years PGA Minority Collegiate Champion Bethune-Cookman could figure out a way to get there if invited. Guess the haves have too much to lose to a team from a historically black university or college.

"For the good of the game" tag line shouldn't have to die with The King!

Funny,
Many experts have said both Cypress and Pine Valley are too short to host elite golfers. They also say Pine Valley has no space for spectators. I'll bet the Pro's would love to get back to Cypress every year like the Crosby years.
As I recall Cypress bowed out because it did not want it membership reviewed or revealed after the Shoal Creek fiasco. I have heard that Pine Valley doesn't want the Tour or anyone else telling them what changes they would like to the the course. Smart move.

AC, I like your idea, but if I'm not mistaken, saw a special on BC and every player in their top 5 was white.

What does color, race or religion have to do with it? I was talking about schools versus checking a demographic box. Loads of have not white kids out there learn to play at munis and what have you courses, who then end up in college at schools across the entire spectrum of our landscape of higher ed and collegiate golf.

I wonder how many of the kids complained because cypress does not have a range and the practice putting green is small

I feel blessed to have played there and hope those kids do as well

Would be fun to see the scores

Mark - zero complaints. I promise you that. One of my friends who played shot 67 today and lost 3&1, but overall I would say lots of birdies and lots of bogies. Very challenging hole locations overall.

Amen Coroner, if race has nothing to do with your statement of inclusion then why do you assume Bethune Cookman's players have never played a place like Cypress? It was obvious what you were referring to or else you would have said "why not invite a school that plays in the NAIA, or in Division III." Most people are under the assumption that a "minority institute" means the majority of students who attend and play sports at that institution are minorities. Many of us know that is just not the case.

Maybe one or some have played as individuals but as a team? D1's at that level only play other D1's. Maybe BC isn't D1 in golf. Fine they should invite the D1 team with the most protected class members on the team. Good luck finding that one. Point made. Insinuate what you want about what you want. Tee it up and we are all created equal!
