ShackHouse Episode 16: 2016 PGA Championship Recap

Turns out there was a bunch to kick around from the 2016 PGA Championship, from the good (Jimmy and Jason), to the eh (tournament ops issues, TNT). The Speed Round consists of amalgamated questions from the incredible response we got on Twitter, thanks to all. It was fascinating how many of you were thinking the same topics, particularly giving the PGA a stronger identity and where things are headed with the Ryder Cup squad.

Here is The Ringer's page for the show.

As always, you can subscribe on iTunes and or just refresh your device subscription page.

Same deal with Soundcloud for the show, and Episode 16 is here to listen to right now!

And the ShackHouse Stitcher page.

For those who missed it, last week's conversation with Jim Nantz is still very timely and interesting on many fronts.

As always, ShackHouse is brought to you by Callaway, who are supporting Golf Fights Cancer and will be announcing some very exciting joint ventures with ShackHouse through the rest of 2016, but in the meantime please check out www.GolfFightsCancer.org.

Callaway is offering points for things you already do — attend a Callaway demo day, purchase new clubs, trade-in old club and so on and  so on. Redeem your Callaway Rewards points at Callawaygolf.com for items like custom head covers, golf balls or golf bags.

Trunk Club is a sensational gift or just a classy, fun and easy way to upgrade your look. Fill out the questions, get a stylist assigned to you and see what they come up with, or go to one of their ultra cool clubhouses. Using the above link will get you preferential treatment!

Framebridge joined us this week and is offering a discount for ShackHouse listeners. Frame those Instagram photos for $39, then use the ShackHouse code HOUSE.

And drink that Avion responsibly! (With real lime juice.)

As always, thanks for listening to the show, making us the #1 golf podcast and don't forget next week we'll be reporting from Rio, with Gil Hanse joining us.

the PGA should be the 4th major, and every bit as important as the other three.

Here is how I would position the PGA to be the 4th major:

It would either be on Labor Day weekend, or the weekend after. You say, the NFL season kicks off on the weekend after. I say, who cares? If you are a golf fan, you will pay attention to the PGA, even if the NFL kicks off on the same weekend. To put the PGA on in the same weekend as the first week of the NFL says: this damn tournament is damn important, and is every bit as important as the first week as the NFL. Heck, I have gone to an NFL game that was the same day as the finals of the US Open Tennis, and we had the U S Open tennis on the tele in the box at the NFL game.

Look, if you are going to promote a golf major championship, you have to have big cahones. Or whatever. Golf is a great game, and should not take second place to the NFL. Well, maybe Tim Finchem's FED-X cup take s second place, but the fourth major of the year does not! Not to golf fans!

Put the PGA championship on the same weekend every year - either Labor Day weekend, or the weekend before, and that is the deal. Just like the Masters is the same weekend in April, the PGA should be the same weekend in late August. Why? Because it is the FOURTH MAJOR! It commands respect as the MAJOR at the end of the summer. The culminating major. The one the defines the winner over the winter until the Masters the following spring.

There is no way that the PGA should kowtow to any other event. Go big, or get off the porch. Position the tournament as the end of summer culmination to the golf calendar, just like the club championship should be for the club golfer.

You position the PGA championship on that date - Labor Day weekend, or the weekend before - and do it every single year. Do it on the greatest golf courses that you can possibly play. Maybe that is even Old White at the Greenbrier after it gets rebuilt. Or the Upper Course at the Cascades/ Homestead. Great old golf courses that will be a stern test. These courses should be every bit as challenging as the US Open and Open Championship courses.

The PGA of Anerica needs to position the PGA Championship as the greatest, best, culmination of the golfing year. And go head to head with the NFL, because it can and should.
Respectfully, college football starts Labor Day weekend.
How about the weekend before Labor Day?
