Video: Should Golf Have A Year-End Awards Gala?

The first ever NBA Awards included fan votes, glamor, fashion, star power, some mild disagreement and plenty of season highlights.

Naturally this made John Feinstein and I agree that a season-ending awards for golf--with all major tours involved--would be a good thing. If nothing else it might tell us when the golf season begins and ends, but more importantly as tacky as awards shows can be, this would be a grand way to recall great moments from the season. Such shows also allow the stars to convene, talk shop and look good.

From Wednesday's Alternate Shot on Golf Channel's Golf Central:

Who would watch? Not me.

Who might not show up? Lots of players.

Cannot think of a worse idea. Sports do not need an awards show. Their achievements speak for themselves. Some dumb trophy for "best chip" Going to Rory McIlroy, who was 15 shots back at the time in Milwaukee? I don't think we need to give out more meaningless trophies. You the tour has enough incentives to not win. Look at any money distribution of any tournament...

I don't think the Tour needs pointers from the NBA: a league already accused of players mailing in games and poor officiating.

Don't you really mean should the "golf media" have a year-end awards show? The game of golf has plenty of awards but the media always needs more hype.

The only reason to watch would be that all the wives and girlfriends would be there.

The golf season never ends, it's a worldwide sport. Tours have their own awards, leave it at that.

Nope. An attempt to get a younger, hipper audience, would ultimately only attract a crustier, whiter audience. Sadly, most older men would tune in only to see the women in their cocktail gowns.

Given that such a caper would inevitably be held in the USA, it's just one more wearing week of travel for the hard-working ET members. Yah boo sucks to a TERRIBLE, utterly poinless notion.

Dumb idea, just as it is for the NBA and NHL and ESPN. But they can probably sell it to a sponsor and it would give Golf Channel another two hours of programming, so I guess it's inevitable.

They already have one, its called the Tournament of Champions, its in Hawaii, its held in January.

wow, such negativity as usual. Not a question for the masses, Geoff. More for the Tour players themselves. IIf I was a player, would say yes, have it during Tour Championship week (if YE is possible before TC conclusion)

Only if Geoff hosted it!

Cold chicken, second-rate highlight reels with rap music, dreadful MCs, bored players cursing under the breaths about having to go and half leaving early. Prepared, cliche-risen speeches and half the audience looking at their phones.

There will always be people who look at the fiasco that is World Golf Hall of Fame induction and say "we should do this more often."

How in the hell can there be a yr end show with this wrap around season crap??

I don't think we need another Gong Show......the quality of TV programming is already near rock bottom.

Somewhat agree with easingwood, when could you have it?
if it was balance of players votes, media and statistics at the end of a season, it might be ok. An opportunity to display some players personality. I am all for rewarding good performances and it should be covered by the media. How does that hurt the game? The PGA Tour is a business, promote it like a business. The NBA, NFL, NHL have AllStar games and award shows, just do it better.

If majors are having a problem with ratings, Golf Central and Morning Drive in the toilet ratings wise, why on earth would you need an awards show that might draw a .1 rating?

Not only that, the season never ends which part of the problem with golf.

I can't wait to not watch this!

LPGA has an awards show in Nov and Augusta, Ga hosts one in April. http://www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-central-blog/curry-play-webcom-tour-event-august

If one was created it would not upset me. That said, I was not interested in the NBA banquet show and would not be interested in watching a similar show on pro golf.
Can you imagine having to yank the family...one more time...to some awards show. Horrible idea. I don't even know people who watch NBA awards..Pro Bowl..all star games??? Sorry...not a fan of doing this for golf.
Player of the year...winner of the 4 majors...Number #1 golfer and Money leader...is really the only awards worth it and they are already covered.

Caitlin Jenner would get a golf hero award for sure.
