Quick Clambake Wrap: Potter Fends Off All-Star Cast And Severe Finishing Hole Traffic Jam

A beautiful but strange finale at Pebble Beach left some feeling a bit woozy but eventually rewarded by a valiant Ted Potter Jr. win.  The journeyman followed a 62 at MPCC Shore with a final 69 at Pebble to hold off Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson, among others. Play bogged down badly due to a combination of factors, yet Potter did not let it deter him from picking up a career-changing win.

Alan Shipnuck with a fun Golf.com game story on Potter's back story and tribulations.

Potter is a Srixon man, writes David Dusek.

Potter's
post round remarks, courtesy of Kevin Casey.

There were the usual oddball antics with pro-am players on the course: Jordan Spieth nearly got hit by a Ray Romano sculled bunker shot. Tony Romo hit a bunker shot with on-course reporter gear on.

Martin Kaufmann would like to pretty much redo the entire thing as a TV show.

I've come to not mind the difference in this week versus others, particularly when CBS fires up the blimp shots and extra tech. The tracer at Pebble Beach was a huge upgrade.

Sadly those elements are not used on the Golf Channel portion of the CBS-produced coverage and it's really a poor look for the PGA Tour to go from plain-wrap TV to a normally produced show. To hold back blimp shots from Pebble Beach is downright weird!

LOL on Potters gear article. A bag full of Ping gear. Outside of his Srixon ball the only other equipment he plays that is in the Srixon/Cleveland/XXIO family are a couple of Cleveland wedges.

Well done to Ted Potter for overcoming the field in great style and having to stand around for ages between shots coming down the stretch. His wait on the 17th was timed at 17-minutes, would you believe? I would like to know how long Ted's final five holes actually took? It made for very bad TV viewing and is not good for the game overall. AT&T should take a serious look at the format of the 6s tournament down in Perth which was full of positive talking points. The 54-hole cut is a positive but cut the ams too! Top 16 could play, 6-hole knock out matches. Last man standing wins! Ted Potter was undoubtedly the last man standing yesterday and all the best to him.

Looks like someone on twitter found Larry Fitzgeralds recent scores versus handicap.
Lets just say 14 was very Spanos like.

+1 Shaka.

This pro-am has turned into the second flight at a high-end club's member-guest. It's for good players with inflated handicaps who "unbelievably" shoot the rounds of their lives when it matters. In my experience, the overall winners of such things do not come from the championship or first flight, where you get very few strokes. It's the guys with 10-12 index that throw up 4 birdies in 9 holes.

Dear AT&T, CBS and Golf Channel: Honestly, no one cares about the pro-am portion of this anymore. It was interesting a long time ago. Please change this. It is not fun to watch these celebs and CEOs play golf. How painful was it to watch Sean Kell line up his putt on 18 for at least 90 seconds, getting that coin in just the right place and his cheater line pointed in just the right direction, and then see him blow it by 20' and pick it up? If the CEOs want to have their own private clambake at Cypress, go ahead. Just don't make me watch.

Talking points seem to be the only thing the European Tour has to hang their hat on anymore. Ted Potter collected $1.33 million for his win yesterday, Mr. Aphibarnrat was compensated at a rate 83.3% lower. OWGR shows Mr. Aphibarnrat is ranked 37th in the world, surely it's only a matter of time until he joins a tour offering compensation commensurate with his world class skills.

In no order--
As to Fitz ~ sadbagging(sic) or just the hot 20% in the most recent?? Didn't read the deal on him, as i have no idea who he is, other than cool hair... the real winner w/o the USGA handicaps was Justin Verlander - who is a '4' and still came in 3rd without a big +1 on 4/4 of the holes.....

Ted Potter Jr. -- first - tag him ''Wizard'' ( ala Harry Potter ) and get over this difficult clumsy name call by all the talking heads--- So many times it was ''Ted Potter (cue Jeopardy music) JUNIOR !!!!! ( oops, nearly forgot----AGAIN!!!)

So other issues with announce crewe V Wizard~~ they go over 1 win/ankle/ then Masters Par 3, when TP/Wiz brings It up at the end ( if they said it before it must have been when I had the sound off- NO IBF FOR ME!~ and i get it, they have a poor Media guide on the guy, but , DAM, didn' they do Torrid Pawns, Farmer's bumpadumpbumpbumpbumpbump only a short while ago, and wasn't Teddy boy leading after round one, I believe, and if they ever mentioned it, and talked about him showing signs of coming on strong, I ever heard it~ maybe Ian said it between doing Callaway Rogue commercials.....

IBF-announcer - dude, golf is not ''lovely'', or at least not the way we play it here in Texas... and the Callaway cuts- hey radio hosts have been doing ''on air copy'' commercials since Tesla was a puppy.

Overview- Always great to see PB- I have figured out how to watch-- I DVR Saturday, and the delete it w/o watching unless someone shoots a 54, or somesuch. Leave the AMS playing on Sunday as is. It is good for the pros to see how slow they are. ~dig~

GinGHIN-
Well said indeed.
British celebrity Jimmy Tarbuck used to call them "tin pot hunters"
Sad to see Larry appear to be that.

Potter Jr. confounds the power pranksters.

AT&T CEO could use golf and fitness training from Kelly Rohrback.

Congrats to TP Jr. He never blinked after the bogey first hole. Very solid, smart golf, playing to his strengths.
First golf where I've watched (almost) a complete round this season. Recording and utilizing the tape delay (except for the play lost between end of GC and start of CBS), I saw every stroke of Potter and DJ . . . and ffwd-ed most of the others, except Reavie toward the end. It was exhilarating to ffwd through slower lads I had no interest in watching, as well as group backup delays at 17, 18, and other holes.
It would have been nice if DJ had stuck around on the 18th green to congratulate Potter and shake his hand. I hit re-wind on my tv to make certain or what I had seen (or didn't see, rather). Unless he was about to shit his pants and had to make a sprint for the men's locker room, there is no excuse for his poor sportsmanship. I texted a buddy who played in the pro-am and was watching at the 18th green; he confirmed the douchebag move and said others mentioned it as well. It amazes me how star players on tour are often not held accountable for their actions.

Congratulations Ted!

Interesting observation there Chuck. Maybe DJ had to rush off to the celebration in Edmonton last night.
