Video: Zach Johnson's All-World Challenge Hole-Out

Stellar stuff today at the final Northwestern Mutual Challenge at Sherwood Country Club, with Zach Johnson holing out this 65-yard shot from the drop area to make par. That forced a playoff which Johnson won over Tiger Woods on the first hole of sudden death.

There's no better time for a thought bubble contest when you have a shot of Tiger's face after Zach's 65-yard dagger.

Tiger: Smile, the camera's on you... that little #%$#%, smile, keep smiling...

Great finish. After Zach's shank from the middle of the fairway, he more than made up for it, with an amazing hole out. Clutch up and down by Tiger on 18 to force the playoff. It might be the silly season, but clearly they were both competing 'till the very end.

Good luck topping this finish, Isleworth.

I'm so over Tiger Woodhead. I was one of his greatest fans. Not now.
Danny that was my first thought as well, shank! Announcers weren't gonna say the word....

Hello Enigma.....Are you out there? Hello........Where did you go?......Oh Enigma.....come out, come out, wherever you are.
Enigma is too busy at the moment reminding everyone over at TGC discussion board of Tiger's 14 majors. But he'll migrate here shortly.

The Lord was good to Zach today.

On the 18th - 1 terrible drive, one average one - he was 25+ yards back of Zack Johnson ? What did he hit a 5 wood ? 2 terrible approach shots, 2 good bunker shots and no good putts. So 2 good shots out of 8 ? (I am not counting the gimme first putt as a "good shot"). Really unbelievable. But then again his terrible final round at Muirfield - when he didn't even need to hit the driver - was just as unbelievable.

Maybe Tiger is finally realizing that even winning more golf tourneys has not "solved everything" as he sees his kids ever few weeks or so.

BrianS the bigger issue to me is tentative putting. Nerves are going.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterSari
Can we see the shank, too? Much rarer that a hole-out from a drop zone.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterKLG
72 - 70 on the weekend rounds ain't going to get it done at anything outside of the US Open. Tiger doesn't often lose tourneys when he's leading on Sunday by a few......
Maybe it was Notah Begay's fault for saying on the 9th hole "Well if he holes this, it'll be the final nail in the coffin." At the time I thought, wow, Notah, try to not be quite such a homer dude, we all know you love Tiger, but gee whiz.

Woods putted horribly. Not sure I can remember the last time the guy missed a 4 footer to lose a tournament.

Really not a great weekend of golf for him all things considered, although Saturday was tough by anyone's standards. Still, he had a comfy lead heading into the back nine on a course that he's played extremely well on over the years, and he let it get away from him.

He has to putt better to sniff Jack's record, no two ways about it.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterPA PLAYA
It wasn't a shank. Not even close.
The ball started at the flag and finished right and probably a bit short. It could be called a slice, maybe, but definitely not a shank. When the ball first left the club, it was heading straight at the flag.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterPress Agent
So sweet to see woody lose like that
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterChicago pt
If we're talking Zach's shot - looked like a shank to me. Tiger's approach in the playoff indeed looked like a slice from where I sat.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterPA PLAYA
PA PLAYA, I'm always surprised by Woods' surprise when he produces that shot (the slicerooney) or drop-kicks it with a swipe-across move designed to produce exactly those kinds of shots under pressure. I'm shocked he doesn't do it every time, which is a testament to his hand-eye coordination and overall athleticism. Insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?
12.8.2013 | Unregistered Commenterhacker
tlavin, that was my second thought.....the good Lord was walking with Zach today! At least the back 9 anyway, after Webb finished.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterDTF
YE Yang. Zach Johnson. They eat Tiger for Lunch.

@DTF, and Bubba.....

johnson sed he had a big club into 18 in regulation, taking something off the shot was risky

tiger was grinning in zach's direction wen the wedge shot went in on 18, great stuff
12.8.2013 | Unregistered Commenterd
Watching the replay on GC right now. Don't think it was a pure shank but definitely "skanky". What a finish.Tiger's bunker shot following the hole out was outstanding and both reactions priceless.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered Commenterol Harv
I was most impressed by Zach's poise immediately after hitting into the water. He smiled and said, "Oh my gosh" (I think) but didn't go through the usual drama, or berate himself, or pound the club lightly in frustration.

Walking up to the drop area with his hands in his pockets he looked a little chagrined, bordering on defeated, but I think he figured if he could make a bogey he still had a still chance. I'm still not a fan, but certainly an admirer.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered Commenter3foot1
just to be clear, a shank is when the ball is hit of the hosel of the club. The ball goes right straight away a LA Webb at the Ryder? Or presidents? Cup a while back.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterPress Agent
@Press Agent...for a top 20 player in the world, it was a shank. It wasn't Steve Stricker at Merion, but it was a close cousin. But The Lord Taketh and The Lord Giveth Back for Zach. For the record, Tiger is always an easy target because he is in contention so often. Even the all time greats didn't win more than 20% of their starts...i.e. Nicklaus. Still expect Tiger to win four or five events next year. That would once again be a career for most of these guys. Especially for all those that criticize that most PGA pros are content with playing for top 10s and paychecks.

Sobel still talking about the Masters in December?
I'm trying to understand what Zach Johnson has done to deserve getting mocked for his religious beliefs ? He won today and I didn't hear anything from him. He seems like a nice, well liked guy. He is nice and respectful to Tiger, even despite Tiger's antics at the Ryder Cup in Wales that was directed towards him. He was right there at Muirfield to congratulate Phil, even though Zack had just a chance with 4 or 5 holes to play than anyone else. And finally, he has been nothing other than a good citizen and a good representative of the sport. I don't really share his religious beliefs, but so what. Would you mock him if he was Jewish or Moslem and laugh at his religious observations of diet or prayer or whatever ? Or his his form of religion fair game ?
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterBrianS
For the rules / tournament guys: why would a tournament committee have a drop zone for a simple water hazard next to a green? I would have thought the normal rules for a water hazard would be in play, and was surprised to see a drop zone was in effect. It was even more surprising to see the drop zone in a perfect spot, 70 yards or so from the green in the middle of the fairway.

(Just wondering what the protocol is for when they employ a drop zone, not making a comment regarding the outcome of the tourney)

George

He "fanned it." which is not so say he whiffed it. He left the clubface so far open that he missed right and short, and didn't compress the ball. Not a shank, and not an ordinary block. For handy reference, see Colin Montgomerie, 18th hole, Winged Foot, 2006.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterGmail
@BrianS you take others to task for mocking Zach's (very public) religious beliefs, and in the previous post you make disparaging remarks on a custody situation that you have absolutely no clue about because all involved have chosen to keep it private

Tiger played well one day (and it was great great golf) the rest of the week, thurs, sat, sun he played like a guy who hadn't touched a club in the last three weeks, probably because well, he hadn't. Skiing and hanging in Vail isn't really conducive to your golf game. Zach on the other hand shot 3 rounds in the 60's. And Zach played a fantastic last 8 holes, birdieing four them. Generally speaking with a 4 shot lead and 8 to go, even par (which Tiger shot) will get it done. As Tiger said Zach :got" him
12.8.2013 | Unregistered Commenterelf
@ BrianS

Good point. Tiger has moved to a fade under Foley but is still squirting a little 5 wood out there 25 yards short of Zac Johnson's driver. I thought the point of a power fade was to let you rip it off the tee but know you'll find it in the fairway. Why not take a bigger club and get it down on flat ground 140 out? Then he hits a little poofter slice with a seven iron and a quavery putt he used to make in his sleep. Where's his killer instinct? Pardon the pun, but Tiger is not the same cat.

They should change the name of this to the Shinebox Shootout. Gmac and now Zach.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterTighthead
Tiger did a post round interview with Sands. Boycott must be either off, or never happened.
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterPat
Wheres Phil?
12.8.2013 | Unregistered CommenterVwgolfer
Gmail called it. He fanned it. In post round interview, he said he did not finish his backswing, and the ball rolled off the clubface sliding right and short. I've got that shot.

TW was a good interview staing that the LAST 3 holes were all near chip ins By ZJ.

All good stuff. Bubba was not on, or he could have been right there.

Kinda wanted Woods to win his last go at Mash Mountain. Too bad.

And that BS rock work in the front of 15 is just dumb looking, on one of the finest looking courses in the country. Those rocks could be paper mache for all they add to the ''reaLISM'' OF THE POOL.

oops.

BTE, the 16th/7th at The Hills, where the Kinko's Champ tour play was for years has a REAL waterfall, the first I know of, and the one they all try and be like, and fail miserably.

12.8.2013 | Unregistered Commenterdigsouth
And the best golf since the wraparound tour season began… isn't a tour event.

I studied the look on Tiger's face those last couple holes. Whatever he was thinking I can't remember seeing it before, much less during a tournament. Maybe I'm imagining this, but it seemed like the usual anger at his own inconsistency these past few years was replaced for a while with something a lot like resignation, or at least weariness.

elf, I noticed you didn't answer BrianS' question, but in the course of things managed to both attack the messenger and try to spin a cover story for Tiger. (Who was he skiing with, considering his girlfriend's torn knee - Steiny?) Way to go, two kinds of pathetic in one post!
Good shot in a lame tournament. The fact that Woods laughed when Johnson holed out says everything. He wouldn't do that in a Major, not even in Bay Hill
12.9.2013 | Unregistered CommenterRyan
@Chuck I think pple are uncomfortable at the idea that Jesus helps you win golf tournaments, but you'll notice I never mocked Zach's religion. As to the skiing a) it was slightly a joke b) she didn't rip up her knee till the 2nd wk after turkey and c) he spent thanksgiving skiing with his kids. He said before the tournament he hadn't practiced, shrug he did the same thing last year to & played about the same, except no Friday 62.
12.9.2013 | Unregistered CommenterElf
Jesus or God or any other supernatural being does not in any way win or lose golf tournaments, football games, political elections or anything like that, which is something that I believe Zach would tell you in a second. Zak's belief in these beings, and his peace of mind or calm or whatever you want to call it may in fact help him to win however. Again, I am not someone who would take the opportunity of a post round presser to mention any religious belief, on the other hand, I'd rather listen to that for a second or two than bleeped out fbombs on the course, or ungracious post round interviews that can't even be bothered to congratulate and recognize great rounds by one of Tiger's rivals. (As usual, he is plenty gracious to those he sees as below him - Zach or example - but let Phil blitz the field at Muirfield or Augusta, and you get the "it was out there" nonsense.
