2015 Open Championship Final Round Notes & Comment Thread

An extra day should be worth the wait as any number of players stand a chance to win the 2015 Open Championship.

The weather forecast continues to look ominous during the key hours the leaders are on the course, though the gust numbers have come down, mercifully.

The traditional leaderboard.

The final round hole locations are here and maintain the streak of four straight days avoiding Peter Dawson's new second hole bunkers.

@griffin...that's what makes it even more worthwhile. Jordon now in interview.
What a PRO in more ways than golf,

Zach has room on his belly for some more sponsorship. His agent should slap a for rent sign on there.

I believe they did the same thing (1,2,17,18) when Daly and Rocca played off in 1995.

Louis Louis Louis!!!

Griffin....Westwood had 17 top-10's in majors including 10 top-5's, never won one.

The problem with your Phil comparison is Phil was an accomplished tournament winner, as are Sergio and Westwood (and they still never clipped one). That is not the case with Day, he's only won 2 tourneys (both lower tier) in his entire career. Heck, Bill Haas has triple that number.

Folks, I think the torch has been passed. Ror's had it in his hands for a brief period but Jordan has full control of it now. Given Jordan's seemingly unparalleled maturity, preparedness, steadiness, level headedness, even-keeled nature, complete repertoire of shots, and ability to rise to the occasion...over the next 5 years I think Jordan wins 4 or 5 for each win Ror's chalks up. Anyone up for some "footy"?!?

oh my!! Poor Leishman.

@highside...Zack has more then he needs. Plus, he's not an exciting player, although a precise master of precision.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterNancy
Well Hole 1 has just been critical in determining the winner; so good to be part of the playoff... but recoverable.
15-16-17-18 would be a pain to get to.

Sorry for typo...the day is just too much.

DTF,

Not really trying to make a case for Day here just playing devil's advocate. Day is also only 27 and Phil was two months shy of 34 when he won his first major so he could pick up a few more wins. Westwood also didn't start getting really close in the majors until his second act after the slump so he was in his thirties so I would say that all three comps (Garcia, Mickelson, Westwood) have some flaws. The other thing about Day is his seeming constant injury and illness woes that while often relatively minor are a little odd for such a young man.

If I'm betting I would say Day will win a major eventually but the scar tissue builds and builds...

All three of them could just go to road hole bunker and have a KP for the W and we would still be glued to the TV.

Go Louie!!!!

I really love how Jordan emphasizes "we" when he digests his rounds. Credit to Greller, but more importantly, it shows how much Spieth really trusts those around him. Post round interviews from others goes like: "I did that", or "I missed that."
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterPaddyC
DTF, Jason Day has 3 PGA Tour wins.

One is a WGC event, the others are the Byron Nelson and the Farmers Insurance.

Not sure how to categorize "lower tier" but the Farmers Insurance was worth 52 World ranking points (compared to 60 for winning The Memorial and 46 for winning at Pebble Beach).

The Byron Nelson he won, however, was only worth 38 World ranking points.

The WGC Matchplay (for which he got 72 World ranking points) is a limited field event but is hardly "lower tier".

Curtis Strange makes Lanny Wadkins look like Herbert Warren Wind.

@ Lip Out

I never thought I'd say this but both Curtis and Azinger seem to have grown into the job. It's like they've both discovered their own personal strains of medical marijuana, and have effectively lobotomized themselves. They're completely harmless.

Seems like the Road hole bunker and the road have played very little role this year maybe in this playoff?
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterGriffin
If only Jordan had skipped the John Deere he would have won, right Geoff?
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterJeremy
@Griffin, yes scar tissue building up on DJ, Jason and Sergio.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered Commenternancy
Big for Zach and Louis here as players with multiple majors are looked at very differently by history.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterGriffin
I am not sure DJ has enough brain power to build up any scar tissue. Million dollar talent and 5 cent mind.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterBillythekid
@Griffin, I'mfeelling a bit down with all the big media for DJ and Jordan and Jason, but I go agree with you that Zack and Louis are going for a different kind of win.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered Commenternancy
Unfortunately, Louis and Marc are giving it to Zach...
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterPress Agent
Zach Freakin Johnson. Geez, what a letdown. Did I miss something and St Andrews suddenly turned into a soaking wet ANGC for 5 days?
07.20.2015 | Unregistered Commenterdsl
Sergio is beyond the scar tissue phase.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered Commenterfyg
12 PGA Tour wins with a couple of different majors is pretty damn good career.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterGriffin
Hall of Fame, no doubt.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterKLG
I'm convinced DJ has athletic power and at times has great imagination...but some of those synapses don't fire when he is confronting a win in a major. I seriously think he needs a sports psychologist and has to reconsider a new caddie on his bag. I don't think his brother is as experienced a pro as DJ needs right now as a major player. DJ needs to regroup "again"...maybe Butch needs to go a step further in a new area with DJ and make him listen.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered Commenternancy
Big time drive and 2nd for Louie. We have a putting contest for the win.

I've been so focused on the golf I didn't even notice a hot air balloon crew using the back of our range for an emergency landing.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterJohnnnycz
Louie has a bit of charm and that space between his teeth! Just for that and his amazing talent...I hope he wins. But, Zach just keeps pluggin' on.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered Commenternancy
Such a great tournament...who said it would be a borefest? It's time we got to see the likes of Seminole and Shinnecock again, every year in fact. Or just move the tour to Britain. A fortnight of superb architecture. And so pleasing to see a short hitter win over the musclebound. Plus I understand Mr Johnson is a man of belief. The young man Spieth is a credit to his parents and country. I do hope that McIlroy is fit for the PGA - surely this would be the showdown to decide the world wants to see. What a stupid boy, yet I suspect he would have struggled out there this week - he seems not yet mature enough to handle life, let alone 30mph winds.

Adam Scott - such free flowing swinging, yet so reliant psychologically on a band aid putting style and caddy. Such a shame.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterDave Bedie
And the boring but talented guy wins! That's OK. It's GOLF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
07.20.2015 | Unregistered Commenternancy
Great Open Championship in the end... very very entertaining.

ZJ played the best today. Worthy champion, for sure.

For God's sake - GET ANOTHER INTERVIEWER! Let Judy interview instead of that clown. Please.
07.20.2015 | Unregistered CommenterRickABQ
Siggy the matchplay doesn't count ;)

Griffin, Westwood had 4 top-10's in a 12 major stretch between '97 Open and '00 US Open. There's no doubt Jason Day has the physical tools to win a major...the intangibles are what is in question. I mean he had a putt for the playoff and the next one didn't matter at all and he left it short?!? Hell that's worse than 3-jacking from 12 feet with a major on the line in my book.

Congrats to Zach Johnson and The Chickenman!! Well done boys!!!
