Trump Golf's UK Courses Suffer Losses In 2016
I'd caution against judging the losses at Turnberry as anything beyond the cost of renovation. And as detailed in Severinn Carrell's Guardian story, these 2016 numbers are pre-election, pre-madness.
However, the losses for Trump International Links in Aberdeen appear to be caused by a combination of factors and do not speak to a strong future for the Martin Hawtree-designed course, which appears to have been ruled out as a Scottish Open venue this summer by the tournament sponsor.
The latest accounts for his network of Scottish companies show he had to plough another £1.3m into his debt-ridden resort in Aberdeenshire to keep it afloat after the North Sea crisis saw its popularity slump among local golfers.
Trump International Golf Links Scotland lost nearly £1.2m in 2016, forcing Trump to increase his interest-free loans to the resort to nearly £41m ($54m) while he was campaigning for the presidency last year.
In their annual report, the Trump organization cited various factors.
The “crash in oil price and economic downturn” which had hit the north-east of Scotland had seen its income fall by 12.4%, he said, while winter storms had badly damaged part of its 18-hole championship course.

The real FIGJAM,-donnie - JAH...he'll tell you.
Nature could reclaim that place in less than a decade. Good.
dig
I love golf, but not as much as nature. Let it go back to nature, onnie- or move there and live happily ever after,.
!00's out of work theoretically; hundreds of thousands in much worse condition- all from one mentally ill man.
25 the guy before he sends your kid to Korea to die. Put in the Constitution to relieve us of a sick president.
dig
btw- i do not hate donnie. It's his actions i hate- he is not mentally well.
Hundreds out of work if they closed, not theoretically like the hundreds of thousands you’re dreaming up, but literally.
A tax base gone. Suppliers hurt. Tourism for the areas, big hit. On the selfish front, another depressing hit to golf. Everything suffers.
In the end, if you think your bit of comeuppance will send Trump to the poor house, you might want to visit another type of doctor.
Actually, it might be good to let some of these places go down the tubes. Only the harsh outcomes will demonstrate to the leftists how insane their thinking really is.
Maybe Donny is like Moe Greene in Vegas - unlucky.
That would be.......ironic seeing as how that is the business model for Donny 2 Scoops' golf course portfolio.
As per Larry Gatlin, it don't matter at all where you've played before, Caledonia's a brand new game.
A) What losses? GAAP? Tax? Some Non-GAAP metric?
B) Are these pure operating cash flow deficits?
What matters is this, and in this order:
A) Are the courses generating actual positive operating cash in-flows. If not, then this is an issue. That means that the operations (i.e - cost to turn on the lights etc...) are not recovered through operations.
B) Assuming they are running a net positive cash inflow, then what matters after that is all about whether, ultimately, current operating cash in-flows can eventually provide a return on investment. What matters is whether cash in-flows can cover the cost of debt financed capital investments, including future interest payments. If cash inflows cannot recover those costs, then yes, this is a loss.
something to consider. The Trump brand name is a trade mark. Those have value. And often, parents charge their subs "fees" for those brand names.
Why does this matter. Because that loss being discussed could be driven, in large part, to tax avoidance schemes with the Parent (Trump Co.) charging the courses a huge fee for use of the Trump name.
